    Colonial on its way...

I'll try to get some decent outside shots of the stock next week when I am off. I think the patch box is about done for Tung oil and the stock is getting close...I've only got a few spots left to build up / even out....Then I can work on the barrel while I let the oil cure.

Another coat of Tung oil :)

I ordered my Kibler Woodsrunner today!

Well done! I'm still working on my Colonial (received it on Valentine's Day but I've been learning new skills and applying them along the way...didn't stay "plain") but I'm into the oil finish now...getting closer :)

Hehehe...the straight razor ended up helping me learn stropping, but otherwise I'm with you.

Working on the "straight" oil now. The stock is starting to get the oil finish chatoyance coming through and the orangy-red is starting to glow / dance. Can't wait to get the oil on to the point of being able to let it cure.

First coat of straight Tung oil went on the stock tonight. It is starting to build and it is starting to show it's chatoyance nicely. I suspect that once everything is done building and properly cured, this stock will dance in the sunlight.

@longcruise I haven't borrowed a set of calipers from work yet, but at 275 grains of pure lead, the total mass is about what I'd expect with the slight difference in diameter (a .570 rb is supposed to be 277gr, mine are 275 gr...pretty much spot on with the proportion of volumes of the two...

    Colonial on its way...

Another coat on this weekend. I'm down to very few areas that are still drinking thirstily, but the chatoyance of the wood is really starting to come up now (it's gonna be 'purdy). Also cast my first roundballs with the new set-up. I'm suitably impressed with the results (275gr, +/- 1 gr for .569")

    Only one gun allowed!

Seeing as I only have one right now, I have to vote flinter >.50cal. ;) While I do enjoy smooth bores and could have selected a smooth bore 24 / .58 cal for my Colonial, I went with the rifled barrel. Where I live, the regs are easier to live with if you have a flinter and I've got some good...

What Muzzleloading Stuff Did You Do Today?

Well, I went through my first batch of balls on the scale at work during coffee break. I had a couple outliers...looks like I didn't have the mold completely seated or had a little lead dripping in the ring and from the look of the surface, they were early ones so I'll chock it up to the...

What Muzzleloading Stuff Did You Do Today?

Well, today I did a first run for my new casting set-up. Only did about 30 (had to be sure my hotplate could get the job done and all). I will say casting with a spoon is a lot more of an art than casting with a bottom pour pot...but I quickly got the hang of it. I'll probably wait to cast...

    Colonial on its way...

Fourth coat of oil went on the stock tonight....the "lightly cut" version. I think I've just about slaked the thirst of most of the wood, just a few areas left where the cut of the stock cuts across the curl exposing the stripes and the wood that tends to take on more oil. I'm going to see if...

nice stuff at the door today

    Nice...looks like a good project.

I'm guessing that knife handle is an oil finished curly maple (or similar). I am getting the same chatoyance with my Colonial, though stationary images don't do the effect justice.
