    Ice Box

You sure brought back some old memories of the past. Right after WW2 we moved back home from Norfolk Virginia To N.C. With all the men coming home from the war housing was scarce so we moved into base housing. It had all the modern conviences, Ice box, pop belly coal stove and a shower. LOL! How...

Round Ball performance story and question

A lot of deer have been killed with a .22 rifle but I don't think it is a good idea . A lot of times it will fail. The same results will happen with any cal. but I will lay odds that it will happen more often with a .45 cal. than a .58 or .54 cal. With all the options out there there is no...

Round Ball performance story and question

I can understand why they swore by them. I experimented with them in my .54 Hawkin . I had a problem with accuracy but it was due to the 1:66 rifling . I could put a ball in the target with ease but not with a conical although it was safe to hunt with at close range. I just prefered accuracy...

Round Ball performance story and question

I use a .54 cal. for deer. A .45 will take deer but it isn't the best choice for large game if using a ball. I use to work in a sports shop when the owner needed extra help. I can't count the times I have heard the story," I know I hit that deer but he ran and I never found it" ? most were...

How much to file the front sight

Some people draw a fine bead, some people use a full bead and some people level the post with the rear sight. I have noticed some guns in museums that hardly had a bead which indicates the user used a fine bead. Doesn't this make the measurement vary depending on what method is being used? I am...

Newly discovered problem with the GPR

Having access to a machine shop I got a brass ramrod for my Hawkin the rod is two inches longer than my barrel and I leave the jag on the rod. I never remove it to shoot and I couldn't get better accuracy than it has?

Very stuck minie ball, tried everything having to pull the breech plug

I am thinking he has a hole through the bullet from trying to use a puller? This would make it harder to shoot out or pull out. This is no longer a job for a novice it appears.

When did deep frying come along?

I would think the reason for boiling food as opposed to frying it in oil is for convenience? I can't imagine the amount of oil needed to fry food for an army. Water , on the other hand is usually easy to find, plus they needed to carry a certain amount of water to Drink and fill canteens.

Help with removing front sight T/C Hawken

You need to be sure you know the exact location the post needs to be. I have run into a few rifles that the sights were not center of the out side diameter of the barrel but were nuts on with the bore. Not all bore are concentrically bored. If you need to remove the post and you don't have a...

    Can You Help?

We should support people that want to hunt with a M.L.R. when we can. The only problem I have run into when I was into archery and is akin to M.L.R. is the modern archer and M.M.L. people have an unfair edge. I saw it in archery when target bows were shooting in hunting class. these bows didn't...

    Weighing round balls

I have weighed my balls before and found it hard to get many the same weight. My .530 cal. balls averaged 226 grains . I might separate all the ones 226 grains to see how much the weight affects accuracy.I wouldn't be surprised to find out that I couldn't tell a difference?
