    Patch knife carry

I have two options I use. The first is a neck knife. However, my most used is a knife in a sheath sewn onto the strap of my possible bag. This sheath was specifically designed for the strap and holds the knife firmly. It has been in use for over 40 years.

Casting Lead balls for the first time _ advice Needed...

You want to get your mold up to temp. I generally put it in with the melting lead for a while. And keep hose gloves on!

Thanks to all for the info I was seeking.

    Kibler information

I have been looking (drooling) at several of Jim's kits. Based on comments here and his web site, I have no doubt they are beautiful and well worth the money. However the one item I haven't been able to verify is the barrel length on each model. Do any of you have access to this information...

    Walker holster ideas

Back 40+ years ago, I acquired a Walker. I knew they were designed as a horse pistol, but being a large man, I had a local leathersmith make me a military style belt holster. Obviously, this means it came with a flap. I still have the gun and holster, but rarely wear it any more.

Conical bullets best suited for Thompson Center shallow grooves 1/48" barrels.

I've been using REALs in my TC Hawken .54 for over 40 years with great satisfaction.

    WANTED # 11 caps

Two weeks ago, Sportsmans Warehouse in Ankeny, IA, got a bunch in. I was on the notification list. Was able to pick up 500 CCI caps. There were still plenty there.

I Hope To Meet With Lead Casting Folks

I moisten the towel very slightly, barely damp, just to keep it from burning. You don't want any water near your pot, because a drop of water in the molten lead will cause it to erupt violently.

lead round balls, are they really round?

Depends on how big of a hammer you have to use to seat the ball. In all seriousness, they should remain essentially as round as cast.

    Amusing/Ridiculous Muzzleloading Misconceptions...

Many years ago, I went deer hunting with my FIL and a group of his friends. Like many of us, I was teased about my pop-gun. The next day as I returned to the camp, I put a frozen pumpkin on a stump. I asked one of the group if he would like to try out my pop-gun. (I was shooting a TC Hawken...

Youtube - Gun building videos being removed

I just checked. There are still many videos on building a muzzleloader on YouTube. However, in light of the above discussion, it would be advisable for all interested parties to download whatever content desired. There are many free programs available to do this. You only have to take the...

    Colt Walker question?

I fixed mine many years ago by taking off the lever retention bar (after shaping it properly) then hardening it slightly. They are soft iron when they come from the factory, hardening it slightly gives it a stronger spring action.

    Comments at the range

I love these comments. I've talked with many that think muzzleloaders are weak and underpowered weapons. Then I remind them of the carnage of the civil war.

Stuck ball, now with drill bit

While I have read much of this thread, but not all, several have suggested heating the barrel, or other methods to melt the lead. There is some doubt whether or not there is any powder in the barrel. With this in mind, I would highly recommend against these types of removal. From what a brief...

    Lee REAL bullet

I've been using the REAL bullets for about 35 years. I lube the grooves, but don't use any over powder wad. They are over sized, so they do scrape down the barrel as it is loaded. In my TC .54 Hawken, they are very accurate, and will quickly take down a deer. A unique fact is that when they...

Powder Weight vs volume? New to purcussion.

Remember that black powder burns much slower than modern smokeless powder. While could probably fill up the barrel to the muzzle, it won't result in a proportional increase in pressure, because most of the powder will be blown out upon firing. While I use about 95 grains in my .54, more would...

Just a show of hands, how many make their own ammution?

I also started with a Zouave, and cast my own for the same reason. When I got married in 1978, I found that my wife's grandfather had a stash of about 1000 pounds of old water pipe. While I have aquirred a lot more free lead since then, I think I still have a little of that stash.
