how I get the iron Ring around the pistol handle?😵

Hello, I have a nice project with my friend and we built two German Wheellock Pistols! So now we need help how we can get the iron ring at the end at the Grip handle?

Either make it with an overlapping joint, perhaps at the front, and fix with an iron pin, or a butt jointand two pins, or cheat a bit and cut the groove [but not to finished size] then cut off the bottom , cutting through the centre of the groove, fit the ring and glue the bottom back on.
Alternatively hold the bottom wood on with a screw.
