I use them after cleaning, usually with ballistol. I don’t use them on anything dirty or greasy because I run them in the wash. I like them much better than plain old terry cloth rags which is what I use for the heavy stuff. When I cut up old shirts for cleaning patches I always cut a bunch of 4” squares or so for lubricating and wiping. Then toss em once they are nasty.

I use them pretty much as @Gtrubicon described. They’re my favorite for applying wax to the barrel channel. I keep them in separate ziplock bags for each purpose.
I use them for my M/L also,wipe with wax,oil,and to just wipe down.
