I am going to try my luck at the local machine shop for a hardened steel nipples wrench for my .39 cal 1851 Navy and my Whitneyville dragoon (both Uberti). What are the exact size measurement for the of these nipples. I've seen everything thrown around but most .096 for 1851 Navy and 209-something for the dragoons. Cab anybody help me with the measurements I need for the machinist?
thx in advance

Lonepine, I too had bad luck with nipple wrenches until I bought the Chapman wratcheting set. Worth every penny. Look them up.

This is one of the few applications that are suitable for a Dremel tool and the metal cutting discs.

Get a 3/16" or 5 mm nut driver for one of the hex drive screwdrivers. You can use the flats of the nut drive to locate the slot. Use the metal cutting disc of a hacksaw to cut down the height of the cone of the nipple. Cut the second slot the width of the nipple flats. A micrometer or a digital Vernier calipers can be used for that measurement. Cut out the waste between the slots and fit the nipple to the modified tool. The nut driver can be turned down on a grinder to fit the cylinder of the revolver.

Below is a photo of a modified nut driver and a small hex drive impact tool. Sadly no longer available at Harbor Freight.

That is how I make mine. Custom fit the 1/4 drive socket to which ever nipple I need one for. The loose socket fits winged musket caps and the one on the handle breaker bar fits most cap & ball revolvers. I have never had one break or round off the nipple.
