Hello guys I'm new to the forum, I recently came over from the cap and ball world so I only ever deslt with flasks and brass measures. I recently got into flintlocks and decided i wanted a nice horn to match my Queen Anne and Brown Bess. I got a nice skrimshawed horn from track of the wolf and its quite beautiful. The only thing is i noticed when it arrived it had a small hairline crack near one of the wooden pegs. Its a beautiful horn and i dont want to return it but i also dont want it to blow up either lol. I did blow through it and it is air tight and thenplug is a nice fit. Is this cosmetic problem only or something that might turn into a real problem? I noticed in the pictures of it on the website as blurred as they are u can see where it is, so it must not have been a concern to the maker when being sent our but for something over 200 dollars I don't want to have to repair it right away. Can anyone give me some thoughts?

The plug extends past the wooden pegs so the insignificant crack, which would not be a problem anyway, is supported by the plug.

I didn't think about the plug going past where the nails were and making it irrelevant. That's good information thankyou guys. Just me being new to horns coming from flasks and hearing stories of guys with cracked horns leaking powder or potentially getting an ember inside, i wanted to make sure I'm being safe. Though personally I thought it was just a small cosmetic crack and visually it doesn't bother me at all. I'm in love with the horn either way!
I had one near a nail once, I ended up sanding on it and it came off. It ended up being a fleck from the natural horn. It might be a crack OR it could just be a fleck from the natural cow horn. I don’t recommend sanding it tho either way in case it is a crack. Just my two cents…Nice horn by the way!
Looks like a natural de-lam, not a crack.

Perhaps a drop of super glue to the crack? It will penetrate easily, though I agree it is highly doubtful you would ever have a concern. Horns can take a whole lot of knocking around.

I make powder horns pretty regularly and to me this looks like an exposed growth line, normally I'll sand mine out but if that's what it is it's probably only a few thousandths deep and doesn't go all the way through.
