I am taking my grandson to Africa next year. He will be shooting trophies, I will shoot a few culls.
One of the things he mentioned was he would probably need to take a few Cape Buffalo cows. I worry my pure lead balls will flatten out on their thick ribs. I shot a Cape Buffalo bull several years ago with my recurve and the ribs were at least an inch thick.

What is the best way or material to cast some harder balls that will still shoot well out of my .62 flint lock?

You could try some 30:1, it's still soft enough to load easily but a little tougher than pure lead. I know some guys say wheel weights are OK for muzzle loaders but I've never tried them, and most likely won't, too hard! Pure lead runs 5-6 BHN, wheel weights go 11-12 BHN, big difference!
