deeper grooves?

I was talking with a knowledgeable guy, and he said that he got better groups with his stock guns if he had the grooves deepened a bit.
Anyone else find that? How much accuracy did you gain? My Deerstalker cap and T/C flint shoot OK with patched RB, but they could do better.

Historically, gunsmiths had freshening rods with a cutting bit that followed the groove to clean the fouling and rust from the groove. It was one groove at a time and a fair amount of labor.

if you look at the info from Leonard Reedys journals that Kindig has in Thoughts on the Kentucky Rifle in the Golden Age the most common repair he made was to freshen a barrel which he charged $0.50. One thing you have to remember is back then the barrels were made of wrought iron which is a much softer material then the steel barrels we have today.

Those rifles are made to shoot bullets without patches. .
