Regarding of what the Po employees are ALLOWED or NOT allowed to do or say. They are pretty much protected from any misconduct. And your experiences may differ from one location to another. They are not consistently well managed.

I don't doubt your word that they asked you. The P.O. employs human beings; some are better at their job than others, some know the rules and some don't.
They aren't supposed to ask but it does happen. Someone not thinking and following the script or just plain nosey or possibly thinking they are just asking a friendly question for conversation.
BTW your post above (#81) is right on. Almost impossible to discipline or dismiss. Our local P.O. went from a great Postmaster (female) to a buthead Postmaster.

OK Let me explain and then I will not comment on your post again .I did not say that you said anything I stated that others had tried to tell you that postal emp. are not allowed to ask what you ship just hazmat questions . I use https://www.pirateship.com/ to print my labels and box em at home. Post offices just scans and excepts without question then , plus it is a little cheaper. Works for UPS and FEDEX too.... Havent had a problem in my own experiences yet (knock on wood) but, your mileage may vary.
I am not disputing your experience at all, May be that’s what they are telling you. I know for a fact what I stated, they DO NOT X-ray packages, they DO NOT sniff them with dogs, or search them in anyway way shape or form. In order for them to do that they NEED A WARRANT. In order to get the warrant they need PC to place in the affidavit and so on. Is almost impossible to accomplish these tasks on regular Joe packages so the few PIs target criminal organizations that smuggle items thru the mail. They couldn’t care less about your ML barrel.
@Salty has posted nearly 400 times since 2022 and there has been nearly twice as many positive reactions to his posts. Why would anyone question if what he is relating is not the plain unvarnished truth? What he posted is what he experienced. Get a grip, he was attempting to help others, not to get in a pi--ss--g match. If you doubt him maybe your shorts are in a wad.

It wasn’t the barrel that attracted their attention. It was the ramrod thimbles attached to the barrel that they claim was mistook for what looked like ammo cartridges. I never said that it was sniffed by dogs either.
Explain this. Would a ramrod thimble look like an ammo cartridge?
How would they see that image without the X-ray?

I know for a fact that it was X-Rayed.
I was told that it was xrayed and that the image looked to them like an ammo cartridge. That was why they pulled it out, opened it and inspected it.
Why do you insist it was not? Were you here? Are you always right? Do you know everything? Are you ever mistaken?
I don’t really care what your OPINION is. This is what I was told.
If you think that this inspection is impossible you got some surprises coming. Does the TSA x-Ray luggage and packages without a warrant?

Thing I've learned about this group is that there will always be disagreements. Sometimes heated and repeated. What I've learned is sometimes at some point one just has to let them go. There won't be a winner. There will be a risk of being labelled a "Karen" if one stands up too strongly for one's side in a disagreement. Regardless of the rightness and righteousness of that side.
I haven’t entered into this thread too much but I have to some extent.
Quite frankly I don’t care what I am labeled be it a Karen or whatever. I believe what I believe and if I don’t stand up for it strongly, then I’m not standing up at all.
I belong to a BMW Z4 forum based in the UK. I have been rather vocal about certain issues and they were contrary to the majority of the members but I was always very polite with my posts. My favorite comment was from a member who said that I was “crazy as a box of frogs” but right after that he said that my posts were polite and respectful.
That is the key, the golden rule. Treat others as you would want to be treated yourself. It is fine to disagree but don’t be disagreeable.
As Rodney King once famously said, “can’t we all just get along?”

A good positive suggestion. I use Pirate Ship and Shippo and it's made my life of shipping waaay easier. I walk in, put it in a cart and walk out. It's really nice when the Christmas shipping line is 35 or 45 minutes long.
Never any more interaction than "how you doin".
I got no reason to doubt Salty. All my doings with him have been straight up. Don't see any reason to pile on him.

Ooh, I’ll have to check shippo out… All being said I don’t doubt @Salty at all. Glad he put it out there. He had a negative experience, hope all goes well for him, really sucks when crap like that happens, I’m glad I haven’t had a negative experience yet.

You should not have told them what was in the box. My local post master told me they are not permitted to ask.
My local postmaster insists on an answer. I told them a tool.
Looks like USPS doesn’t always follow the law huh.
I live at the southern border. I don’t know for sure but I’m guessing that there is a lot more scrutiny here. Legal or not.
Regardless of what I answered, I think the weight and shape of the box caused concern and thus the x-ray which caused some employee to interpret the image of the ramrod thimbles as ammo cartridges.
Alls well now. After their inspection and release of my package, it has arrived at the destination.

Ive shipped firearms via USPS many times but won't anymore because of the added paperwork that opens me up to more possibilities to make a clerical error and get my license pulled under Bidens zErO tOlErAnCe PoLiCy. But I've had a few bad experiences.
I typically deal with a young girl that knows her stuff. She may be the lead or supervisor or something because most people go to her with questions but one day I had a new guy and went through the usual process at the PO. He started to give me ish for not having the box taped up and then seemed bent out of shape when I said that it's a firearm and he needs to be able to check that it's empty. So he does and I give him the form stating that myself and the receiving individual are both ffl's. Then when I'm answering the prompts on the machine about liquids, fragile, hazards, etc... he tells me to press "yes" that it's a hazardous item. I said, "no, it's not a hazardous item as a cleared and empty firearm." He starts giving me ish again just as the young girl comes by to tell him that I'm right

Another time was at the hub where I was picking up a long gun but it wasn't listed on the box but my business name has "Gun" in it. I usually deal with the same guy all the time but of course there had to be a new guy. He asked for my ffl and I replied that I don't need to present it to him and he insists that I do because I'm picking up a firearm. I said, "how do you know it's a firearm in the box?" He stammers and hesitates and asks, "Well is it?" I replied that I don't have xray glasses and told him to call Jerry. He calls Jerry, who I could hear on the line that asked if I was the big guy with a beard and told him that they couldn't ask to see my ffl and to give me my package.
Sometimes these people don't know the laws and rules that they are supposed to know and work under.
