I'm really confused.

Are you cleaning the bore with rum and antibacterial wipes?

You also mention using the correct lube to be able to foul it and not clean for awhile. What lube would that be?
Actually what he is trying to say is the lube he uses to lube his barrels with after cleaning and for patch etc ,you don’t have to go straight home and clean your gun .You can leave for some time like a month or two with out cleaning it and it won’t be full of rust and nasties .He is referring to the natural animal fats that he renders or even the coconut oil and olive oil he’s uses .I think he uses the wipes for his hands and when he does finally clean he uses boiled water which removes all the bad stuff in the barrel ,lead fouling even the lube .Its all about the lube he’s using .

I wondered if the lube/oil whatever used for preventing rust when in storage would have any impact on it or not. I use ballistol between shooting sessions for rust protection.

I for some odd reason constantly get flash rusting after cleaning my bore even though I use cool water and dry it immediately after. The drying patches are always orange. I know it's not the lub or oil or anything I use. It's flash rust. Not sure why. Drives me crazy! That is the only reason I'm a little hesitant to try it. This even happens when rinsing with distilled water multiple times after cleanig.

I might give it a go anyway.

Try rainwater or creek water.

My self when I clean a use the kettle I dry patch it right away anthen I put a saturated patch with wd-40 down the barrel and leave till the next day .I don’t generally use oil till late fall for winter storage then ill use my bees wax and olive oil mix or motor oil and have never had any troubles .Your orange patches could have something to do with what your using to clean your gun with .Next time you clean your gun pour boiled water (hot) down the bore and leave it a couple minutes and repeat then dry patches .And just clean your gun with water outa the tap when clean the use the boiled water oh and have a glove on to hold your gun so you don’t burn your hand .You also need to realize that Brits lives in a very wet and humid climate and it works for him .If you have any questions Nathan would be willing to advise you he’s been at this for a long time but that’s up to just pm him he’s a good guy .

Hi Brit,
I'm sure you've written your loading procedure on here before but could you please describe it for me? I have a 58 caliber smoothbore I'm still getting acquainted with using 3F which is the finest powder I have.
I've had a .58 smoothbores and they are great.
I use to drop an ounce of shot in them mostly and probably 60gn of 3f but if your gun has long barrels try 70gn.
I pretty much always stamp my own thin cards , leather or felt for wads.
I made my own punch.

I’ve been swabbing with bear grease from October Country between shots. I use a strip of pillow ticking about six inches long attached to the ramrod to apply it. Just don’t use too much.

I’ve gone five months without cleaning but plan to clean soon.

i miss pheasant hunting so bad, dad and i killed piles of them way back when, mom always made pheasant for Sunday supper. you are a lucky man!!!
Thank you, I know. Long may it last.
I'm out many nights a week getting the predators.
I leave most the hens alone and some manage to breed in the summers.
