flintlock or caplock I am very leery about what I want the first trigger pull to deliver! I DO NOT want to hear a loud CLICK! To prevent this from happening I'm not going to run a patch down the bore that is even remotely loaded with too much liquid to foul the ignition area. I wipe the bore prior to each shot because I've discovered over the years that this method gives me a consistent POI! Rather than wiping with any of many liquids I use one I carry onboard aka SALIVA! I put a 3"x 3" white patch in my mouth and I then wrap it around a .45 caliber brush and run it down the bore followed by a same size dry patch wrapped around the same .45 brush. This gives me the same amount of pressure when ramming the ball down shot to shot. I don't use fake powder! BP is the only way to go IMO especially if shooting the flintlock rifle. And make certain that the powder is DRY!! This works for me!

I've had a misfire while hunting and can tell you that it is the saddest sound in the WORLD! BUT, it had nothing to do with the powder charge in the bore.

Same here. It wasn't a loud "click" it was a not so loud "pop" from the cap, instead of a 💥BOOM💥 This could be from wiping the bore.

I've had a "clatch" where the spark from the frizzen was non-existent, and thus the prime in the pan was unaffected, and I've had a flash-in-the-pan, which did a wonderful job of signalling the two doe I was trying to reduce in number to promptly flee.

With a caplock I always make sure the barrel is clean and dry by running a dry patch down it before loading, and then popping two caps to clean the channel from the nipple to the barrel. THEN I load.

With a flinter I make sure the touch hole is clear, then load after wiping the barrel with a dry patch

If getting hammer falls without ignition, it just shows the operator isn't fully familiar with their firearm. With my flintlocks, I am aware of my flint condition at every shot. If just plinking, I will try to squeeze out another shot or two before resharpening or replacing, being fully aware the chances of firing are reduced. For hunting, I know the gun will work first time, every time.

You don't possibly hunt in an area that has many days of 90+ RH and rainy conditions! I do! And I'm QUITE FAMILIAR with my rifle.
 
I just clean wipe out my bore and use a shot of canned air to blow out the flash hole. If a percussion then I remove the nipple and drop a grain or two of 4f in there and put the nipple back on.

Is this a hunting/field procedure or something you do during a range visit?

Good advice, the key to swabbing is a damp, not wet, patch followed by a dry patch.
That's what I've come to do. Took some mistakes but understanding that degree of dampness is a key bit of knowledge that requires OJT. 😄
