What is your main purpose for this rifle?

I've been shooting it for a year. It fouls easily and that makes it difficult to ram a ball home.
I have just been swabbing every shot or every other shot. That keeps it manageable.
Tried a thicker patch (0.018" versus 0.015"), but then it's a serious chore to ram the ball down.

I only do target shooting. Competitions, woods walks, primitive shoots, etc. Also take it out on overnight primitive treks.

This is my primary rifle for everything. Got a pretty 38 cal, but that's my backup rifle for competitions.

If you shoot the rifle often the patch will polish it. just shoot it.
I have polished several barrels by fire lapping them. A slightly undersized round ball and a thick patch that is lubed with a bees wax & oil with valve grinding compound coating the patch. I use a light powder load about half the grains of a standard load.

I never thought about doing that!!!! thanks bud.all this knowledge I'm getting from yaw really impresses my buds. hahaha they actually think 🤔 I know something. hahaha. but later I tell them where I'm getting the information from. well I wait a week or so before I tell them

I went shooting today, after scrubbing the bore with valve grinding paste and steel wool.

I can load with a thicker patch, and now I can get 5 to 10 shots without having to swab.

This is the 300-yard shooting range in my backyard.

50 yard stance.

If you ever do any lead slug barrel lapping and experience how long it takes to remove any appreciable barrel material with lapping grit you will quickly change your mind about that notion !
