It’s been a ROUGH season.
I’m not sure I’ve been put through the wringer as much as I have been this year in what ended up being a very long season. Hunting pressure ramped up this year on the surrounding properties. A neighbor graciously threw a bar of soap under one of my stands (awfully nice of him, don’t ya think?). I had a heartbreaking encounter with a what would’ve been my largest archery buck to date. I painstakingly watched my main target buck cruise the neighbors during daylight for weeks on end. Deer populations in the area I happen to be hunting (particularly the doe population) has been low. To wrap it up, virtually every deer I was chasing disappeared after Thanksgiving.
Brutal.
However, one of my side goals this year was to harvest a deer with my flintlock. Wouldn’t you know it, a buck who I passed just a couple weeks ago in hopes one of the bigger bucks would show, made an appearance. He proudly cruised a finger pushing a smaller 8 point to 103 yards which was the closest opportunity I was going to have.
While I carried my high power along for the sit, I felt confident in my abilities with a solid rest to send a 279 grain lead ball down range with an accounted for 5” drop in trajectory where he stood. The .57 hornady projectile did its job as I landed a heart shot and he only made it 24 yards.
While he broke his tallest tine (go figure
) in September, I didn’t care too much. It’s a major sense of accomplishment being able to take home a mature buck, let alone harvesting one with a rock banger.
Huge shout out to the landowners that make this happen and the family for putting up with all of my time spent out of the house! We’ll see what the evening sit brings!

. That’s the way it goes I suppose. I watched coyotes chasing deer several times, my property is crawling with them. I think Christmas week I’ll call some in. I haven’t been shooting them in a couple years since fur prices are so low. Well there’s always next year, god willing, nice buck!
Be sure and mount the bar of soap above the fireplace.
