i got this rifle a couple of years ago at an auction. i paid around $120 for a CVA Hawkens left hand flintlock in 50 cal. it also has a flint that is 5/8" x 3/4". the FL has a 2 screw patch box. i was wondering what year it is?
Connecticut Valley Arms, Inc
made in Spain black powder only
Hawken Rifle
50 caliber

i don't like the original sights, so i put on a Durasight fiber optic sights. i like them, they are much better than block sight.
i have used prb and 70.0gr Goex FFg that makes a cloverleaf pattern. i have used maxiballs and Goex FFg (70 - 100gr) that make maybe a 4" group at 50 yards (3 shots). this was made on a bench. i have killed a doe, but by the time PA flintlock comes, my freezer is full of deer meat. this year i have a tag and alot of room for my freezer, well, one deer anyways. i will take it out, but i won't shoot a small yearly deer. i go for average to bigger deer.
mostly where i sit, 50 - 60 yards is a far shot. 30 - 40 yards is more like it.
