Yeah it does seem a little like cheating. It would be nice if they specifically spelled out open iron sight or peep sight. Montana already has a liberal enough season so anything that helps a few more critters make it through the season I'm all for. I've talked with a couple guys that have them. They claim they don't help with accuracy or range but I can't see how they don't help in a hunting situation. Shooting paper vs. a live animal in the mountains is a lot different. A lot of times the fundamentals go out the window in a hunting situation and the simplicity of placing a red dot on a critter seems more fool proof aligning open sights. I've seen it a dozen times with guys who shoot great at the range with archery equipment then fall apart with a bull in front of them.I would lean towards a .54 personally that’s my preference for patched round ball, I use 90grs of 3F with .018 pillow ticking patch lubed with mink oil. There is a lot more choice of lead projectiles in .50 caliber locally that I have seen in the Missoula area. I now live south in the Bitterroot and I am a big flintlock guy. There is a loop hole in the verbiage of the regs and you can use a non magnified red dot optic, which I don’t care for as for me personally its ridiculous but it what it is. For me traditional is traditional, that’s like throwing a 4 pin sight on my longbow. As a warden who I know explained it that exact way saying he doesn’t agree with it either but that’s the way it was written, he told me they had tons of calls about it this year.
