Looking for a gunsmith to make me a bun nut.

bun nut.jpg

This is a EIC Fusil in need of a bun nut. Looking for someone to make one.

I can send lock to who ever can make such a nut. Someone in Oklahoma would be nice, anyone reputable in US would be good also.

Suggestions?

The hard part may be getting the threads right, if it’s not an available size tap. They used some weird sizes, I once spent a futile search on a screw for a German unmentionable army revolver. Not metric OR standard! I just re tapped the hole the next size up. Do you know the pitch thread you need?

Shaft major diameter measure .190. THreads appear to be 28TPI
It really wouldn't be a difficult job, but you'd have to have the thread pitch along with the other two dimensions you gave to make it work.
For the nut any piece of steel the necessary thickness drilled and taped then shape to the right dimensions work. Probably would be a good idea to chase the threads on the tumbler.

Pitch is 28TPI, what I think you mean is thread shape-Vee thread. The 60 degree threads of my thread gauge seem to fit.

The shaft threads would need chased as the end of the shaft has been peened.

I suppose I could grind a V thread tool that small and single point the threads. But playing with this, this afternoon, I fear my elderly hands and eyes are bit (lot) feeble for this work. Even with my new glasses. That is why I am asking for someone else to do it.

Major dia. of .190 would indicate a #10 size, so it seems to be #10x28TPI. I'll dig and see if I have that tap.

Why is it called a “bun nut”?
Never heard that term before.

I checked my gunsmithing tap box and standard thread tap box and a bunch of loose taps in my tool box. I don't have that one.

I checked Machinery's Handbook 22nd ed. There is a listing under British Standard Whitworth for fine threads, BSF, 7/32-28tpi. It has an asterisk footnote that saws, "to be dispensed with wherever possible." Of course. Bet this was a popular thread in the 1840's when this gun was made.

Machinery list a 10-24 tpi course, and a 10-32 tpi, fine under unified screw threads. I did find a listing for 10-28 UNS selected in Unified screw threads table 4.

The notes say Select thread are used "If threads in the standard series do not meet the requirements of design, reference should be made to selected combinations in Table 4."

I wonder if this applied in 1840?

Checked Amazon and found a tap and die in 10-28 set- the set will be here in two weeks.
