Welcome from Upstate New York's Central-Leatherstocking Region.
Howdy Stumpkiller,
I am originally from upstate NY (Chemung County and Ontario County). I recently moved South 3 years ago. (Thanks Kathy!) I still make it up to NY every December to see family and take advantage of the extended muzzleloader season. In my opinion, NY/PA still has some of the best public land hunting on the East coast.

Then you know better than most of your current neighbors that "New York" isn't just the rat-hole City. Lots of State Lands nearby that are available to hunt on. But I like to work my own little 20 acre slice of woods (though I have a non-resident "neighbor" who lets me hunt his 360 wooded acres for small game (or big game in late muzzleloading and bowhunting seasons) in excange for keeping an eye on his cabin that he uses for two weeks a year. For traditional bowhunting and side-lock muzzleloading you can get pretty close in the NY woods. That's my niche for hunting. Whitetails in the woods.

We hunt the same way. I only hunt with my 54 renegade anymore and am waiting on my Kibler woodsrunner kit. Can't wait to get it out next season in NY. I have yet to be skunked up there. I miss my 25 acres in Naples. Had the same scenario. Neighbor gave me free reign of his 150 for keeping an eye on it. You would never get that kind of love in Alalabama, lol.
