    Barrel Bending Tips

Great video! The barrel bending portion of the video was just what I needed. The two wooden blocks and "C" clamp method is just a simpler path to exactly what the factory guy is doing in the video. By creating a slight belly in my smoothy's barrel, it will allow a better sight plane without...

    Pack Baskets

Thanks guys for the thoughts and resources. Not looking so much for a period treking item, as just a "period" camp item to store gear in when camp is set up at a local rondy. I'll check out the websites listed.

    Pack Baskets

I'm looking to pick up a couple of pack baskets, and could use some leads on where to look for plain basic fur trade era 20"-22" pack baskets. Thanks in advance!

    Barrel Bending Tips

Thank you. I appreciate words from someone who doesn't think I'm off my rocker. I also have watched a pretty darn good Trade Gunner bend one over a log. The guy wins more than his share of smoothbore matches. I was just looking for tips on a more "civilized" way to do it.

    Barrel Bending Tips

Good advice. You can bet I'll go slow and steady. I'm going to try to get an older blackpowder gunsmith that lives nearby to give me a hand. He's supposedly bent a number of them to get the point of impact just right. I really do appreciate all the great advice I've received here on this...

    Barrel Bending Tips

Mirage off the barrel flat is something to consider. I appreciate your input. To those opposed a bending a trade gun barrel to adjust the sight image, apparently you haven't encountered a barrel that would require filing all of the front sight off, and still hit low. And, don't worry I won't be...

    Barrel Bending Tips

Good points. I realize that position on the stock is critical, however in this case I believe it's just plain physics. When I sight along the barrel flat so the turtle front sight is "resting" on the barrel flat, it's hitting 8" low at 50 yards. I have to raise the turtle sight a 1/4" off the...

    Barrel Bending Tips

So, are you saying you left approximately a 1/4" (your pencil) of visual barrel. With my Trade Gun that's also what I need to "show" to hit dead on at 50 yards. I want to bend the barrel so my turtle front sight is sitting right on the visual flat of the barrel. Does this sound right? It would...

    Barrel Bending Tips

Thanks for the confirmation that the "C" clamp idea is a good one. And, the stock on a Trade Gun is not the problem. In order to use the flat of the barrel to sight along, the barrel will have to be bent to adjust the point of impact. Pretty common requirement, and not a Bubba fix.

    Barrel Bending Tips

Yup! That's what a old friend said too! I guess I was looking for some method more "gentle" than whacking a bench or thumping it across a log. Shoot! I'd probably accidentlly shift my grip and end up shooting sideways around trees.

    Barrel Bending Tips

Howdy Gents! I've dusted off the NW trade Gun I built almost 20 years ago, and found it's shooting typically low. Trying to consistently guessimate how much barrel to show ain't going to cut it for good accuracy. So, it looks like I might have to bend it. Using the search function I can't seem...

sprucing up an Investarms Hawken stock

If it's an Investarms for Cabela's, take a magnet and make sure all parts are steel before you consider browning it. I refinished a Cabela's "Trade Rifle" I picked up, and had to order a replacement steel ramrod rib from Lyman. The blackened one it came stock with was made of aluminum. Good luck...
