Welp, I am back....the real black powder stunk like a rotten fart but worked great. I'm still having issues though. First shot, perfect...no issues. I used a thinner patch and the 50 cal ball went in no problem. The second shot stuck in the barrel about 3-4" in and it was like I hit a wall...

    Load help

Thanks fellahs, I'll have my son with me along with my soon to be nephew in law (marrying my sister's daughter). I may load up about 60 for my son so he's not scared of the gun. May load up 400 for my nephew in law and use 3 balls! :D No, not really. Thanks, I'll report back. New

    Load help

Hi all, I have a high plains sporter that I was given, really cool. I was plugging and fouling it up with 60 grains of Triple 7, so I bought some GOEX real BP. I have a friend that works for Bass Pro who brought me home some fff Goex for rifles. They also gave me some ff for pistol calibers...

    Kit gun?

Hello all, Christmas is coming fast and I thought that I might ask Santa for a nice black powder kit that my 12 year old son and I could put together and finish. I want something that will be nice...especially something with a nice stock quality...as opposed to the kits sold at Cabelas. Yet...

Tough day at the range, some questions

Jethro, Thanks for the great and detailed post. The last time I cleaned it I really gave it a good scrubbing and the part of the bore where I can see looks exactly the same as when I got the gun so I don't think it was a lack of cleaning. One thing I noticed when using the round ball without...

But will the musket caps hurt anything? I already have the caps and nipple is why I ask. New

    Load help needed

I am splitting this out from my other post to get some ideas. I have a TC High Plains Sporter which is a .50 cal and has a 1:48 right hand twist. I plan on shooting deer with it using round ball and patches. I just ordered some new, thinner patches to use with my round ball. I am using a...

Tough day at the range, some questions

If I were to go with regular BP, what brand should I use and what load level for hunting deer? I ordered a cleaning kit last night with a boar brush for the .50 so I should be able to take care of the ring, if any. I'd like to use the rest of this powder so as to not be wasteful. Thanks, New

Tough day at the range, some questions

Hi. After the last session I plunged it into hot soapy water and kept plunging it out until the water ran clean through it. I then dried it out with patches and let it dry. I then ran a patch of weapon shield clp down it to prevent rust. I will try the alcohol next time as well. Thanks, New

Tough day at the range, some questions

I ordered a new one last night with the idea of having a spare so that if it happened at the range again, I could just switch nipples while the other one was cleaned up. I'm new, what would a blowback be...I'm assuming that fire shoots out of the pan through the nipple and into my face? That...

Tough day at the range, some questions

Interesting....what would an appropriate load be? I actually got the load information from the fellahs here back when I was given the gun as a gift a couple years ago. I'm not married to the idea of the 777 80 grains. I'm willing to change or reduce the load if someone can give me some idea...

Tough day at the range, some questions

It is two years old and has only been opened once. I thought about the powder being the problem but on some shots it worked fine...this seemed to be more of an issue with the nipple system clogging up. Another member had a nipple pin that I used to clean it and then the gun fired with the same...

Tough day at the range, some questions

Thanks....yes I am sure on the patches. I only bought one size and one pack since the gun was given to me so there was no chance that I mixed them up with others hanging around the house. I don't have any other thundersticks, this is my first. Thanks, New

Tough day at the range, some questions

Hello all, it has been a while. I took my TC High Plains Sporter out today to the range to sight it back in. I took it and had it shooting great last time, drove all the way home and while cleaning the peep sight came loose! :barf: I use 80 grains of Triple7. Problem 1: I am using a 50...

    Bullet question

I think that's a great idea at this point. As long as it takes the deer down at 50 yards, I am good shooting the PRB. Thanks all for the advice. New

    Bullet question

Thanks all, I will stick to ball and just give it a shot. I won't let the kid out with it until he's accurate as he needs to be...now whether buck fever takes over, I dunno ! :D New
