'42 Springfield Question
They were using Alox..I had good luck with my minie balls lubed with 2 parts paraffin, 2 parts lard, and 1 part beesswax by weight in the .55" Mississippi rifle. I never got around to tryng out ball and buck.- wittzo

Steel shot
I've been shooting my MVTC .62 Howdah pistol with BB's with and without regular plastic wads (with the shock wad and over powder wad cut off) with no ill effects that I can tell, but they're not hardened steel shot, just Crosman copper plated BB's. another buckshot questionI
Traditionally, you load equal amounts of shot and powder. If you use less powder than shot, you get a tighter pattern, if you use more powder than shot, you get a larger pattern. '42 Springfield Question
I've got a Euroarms '42 Springfield smoothbore, and it's undersized a tad. Euroarms recommends using a .678 ball with a .010" patch..The closest I could afford was an Indian made .680" mold which casts ovoid balls that are about 500 grains and can be tight if I don't drop them in just right. .62 load for O buck
I wouldn't use anything larger than #1 Buck with that bore diameter, it might "bridge" where two pellets try to go out the barrel next to each other and get stuck in the barrel and block the bore.
