Bill, how did you get this particular patina on the barrel? I love the look and would like to try something like that. Was it simply browned and rubbed out?

    Is brake cleaner bad?

I too was concerned about the stock finish so i should have mentioned I had the barrel off and in the kitchen sink.

    Is brake cleaner bad?

Today I finally got around to making a longer ramrod for my T/C .50 cal barrel so I could clean it. This is a new to me barrel and since it's longer than my other two I had no way of cleaning it all the way down. After running about 20 patches down, all of them kept coming out dirty. i...

    Whats in a name???

So what is it about this particular barrel, or any other for that matter, that would make it a 'hawken'? There is no special marking or name other than Thompson Center. Is it just the length or the way the breech is manufactured.

    Whats in a name???

I have been reading this forum for months and have learned a great deal from all of you guys but one answer still seems to elude me. What makes a Hawken a Hawken, a plains a plains, etc., etc.? I hear a lot of terms being used to identify a particular style of gun but I can't seem to wrap my...

Gald I had a Ball Puller!

After further review and testing, it's not actually leaking. Seems I just happened to look about the same time water was merely dribbling from the nipple, running it's way around the bolster and dripping from the breech hook. Thanks for the advice though.

this sounds like too much fun! count me in.

Gald I had a Ball Puller!

And nope, I did not, have not yet, dry balled. But plan to, hence the reason I have a ball puller. Went to the range yesterday afternoon so my son could shoot his CVA .50 for the first time and he had a blast. I think he really did enjoy shooting a traditional gun. He tends to be very...

    Daly .50 Cal Restoration

Ok guys, I'mma gonna need some help with this one. I have just received a new purchase from a fellow member and I am planning a complete restore. I am the proud new owner of a Charles Daly .50 Cal made by Investarms. The lock needs some work since it is not as smooth as it should be (feels like...

    Is this Hawken "right"?

Doesn't matter to me. I would love to own such a gorgeous looking rifle. Good job on the build. How does it shoot?

Do you typically remove lock for cleaning?

Guess i too just learned something new! Time to get the ole girl out and take care of this. I thought I did a pretty good job of getting my new to me rifle clean before the first time i took her to the range. Guess not.

    Manual/Parts List for a Daly .50 cal??

Does anyone know where I can find a manual or parts list for a Charles Daly .50 cal rifle? I've done a few internet searches using different search terms with no luck. I've purchased a fixer upper from a fellow member and would like to know a bit about it and I'm sure I'll have to replace something.

What load should I start with?

I tried the 2 patch tip with my .480s and they were a bear to get started down the barrel. However, the accuracy of the first three shots were greatly improved and much closer to center from 25 yards from bench. Once I get some .490s I'll really start having fun.

    First Time Out

Thanks for all the advise. I looked into midway and midsouth and there shot is much cheaper. I also went back out to the range yesterday and tried doubling up on the patches since I'm using a .480 ball and the accuracy was greatly improved. However, it was a bear to get started down the barrel...

What load should I start with?

I was only 25 yards out. I'll get back out there in the next day or so and try doubling up on the patches to see if that helps until I can get some 490s.

    First Time Out

You are right. I forgot to mention that I was only 25 yards out. I'm going to go back out in the next day or two and try shooting with a double patch on those 480 balls and try to use them up until the 490s come in. Since I live in a small town my only option is a small local gun store they only...

    First Time Out

Finally got to go shoot my son's new CVA Mountain Stalker .50 cal yesterday. Well, new to him anyway. We picked this up at a pawn shop back in December. This was my first time shooting a BP gun and I will certainly not be my last!!! I had a blast. I wish I had had more time so I could have spent...

What load should I start with?

Had a great time at the range yesterday. Unfortunately, I didn't get to spend as much time there as I would have liked to though. I'll be posting some pics on a new thread of my first time out. This gun was shooting very consistently high and left using 60 grains of triple 7 ffg and a PRB. I had...

What load should I start with?

well wish me luck. I'm off to the range and I guess I'll start with 50 grains. When I went to purchase everything needed to shoot this gun, and having absolutely no clue, (this was before i found this site) I told the only local gun store I needed everything and bought what they sold. The .480...
