Heaviest Bullets For .50 Caliber 48" Twist

The biggest I've shot is the smaller 250gr lee real, so I have no advice. Just chiming in to ask why? I've seen the big molds, and seen the great plains bullets for sale, but never understood their use. Are you hunting dangerous game with it or long range shooting or something else?

    Can You Help?

Speaking as a recent trad ML convert, the first 40 years of my shooting experience was with modern firearms. Aside from appreciating an ancient relic hanging on the wall I had no interest. I get where they're coming from, most people want easy and reliable. Eventually I got bored with the...

What Muzzleloading Stuff Did You Do Today?

Cast #5 .490 ball which got me about 200. I have them in a big empty tums bottle in the back of the truck so they can tumble off the sprues over the next few days. Also cast 50 Lee REAL 250gr, and powder coated them with Eastwood ruby red. I'm tired of the pain that lube is on conicals, so...

    Black powder on smokeless ranges

More often than not I get a ton of questions, to the point where the range session is wasted on just a couple shots. I do get some strange looks at the range on occasion, fair enough, some people don't get why I'd be into 250 year old tech when there's so many more convenient options. I didn't...

Thanks, for some reason I was thinking it should go into the plate not the.bolster. I see what you mean now.

Check out greenhill's formula, it's a good starting point but not perfect. .

    Bullet casting/sizing advice welcome...

I won't condemn you, it's your rifle. Personally I wouldn't want to risk grinding down the corners of the lands by making a habit of doing it. I have done what you're suggesting with copper choir boy, and with scotch brite in the past. Both can still abrade steel, but at a slower rate. Still...

    Bullet casting/sizing advice welcome...

I am not, but I've been thinking the same thing as you. I suspect a slightly larger wad, maybe .510 would be even more effective because it would be a more forceful wiping action. I have a punch, just need to find some quality wool felt. I've been using .50 dry felt wads from track of the...

    Bullet casting/sizing advice welcome...

I'm no expert, so tell me to kiss off, it won't hurt my feelings. I noticed you didn't mention a wad. I use a well greased felt wad between the powder and the bullet. It protects the base from hot gas to prevent leading the barrel, and helps wipe more lube in the bore, and I feel the felt...

    And it begins...

I'm gathering parts for my first build. I've decided to repro, really I should say take inspiration from and attempt to repro the spirit and architecture of, this J.P. Beck Gun. If anyone knows of a book that has a study of it, please pass along the info. There is some very basic info on the...

Anybody shoot here in Western PA/Ohio/WV?

Not sure where you're at but I've been shooting at Forest Grove 3rd Sunday and Clairton the 4th sunday at 11 am for woods walks. Patched round ball and open sights only.

I have such a long way to go

I've been trying to learn graver making and hammer engraving. If someone could suggest exercises that would improve my skill, I would be grateful. This is my mark that I created a couple years ago and have been branding projects with it. It's now on my throwing hawk, so it cannot be confused...

    How do you prime?

Those are really cool. My luck I'd wind up with a pocket full of powder though. If I could figure out how to keep it handy and safe from accidentally emptying it I'd definitely like one of those. I worry about the other push style brass doodad thigymajig too. Lately I've been trying out...

    Priming Horn Project

I've never seen anything like that. Did you just invent pewter caps on a horn or was this something you've seen before? Regardless I really like it. I've never cast anything, please excuse my ignorance. Would it be possible to make a clay receptacle, pour the molten pewter into it then dip...

    Beeswax

Good idea with the silicone mold. I find i use a lot of beeswax too. Lip balm, paw wax for pooch, leather dressing, patch lube, conical lube. I've had the same problems with the big blocks. For flux, I'm new to casting, but found I prefer sawdust. the beeswax is good to float out the garbage...

How you clean pan & frizzen?

What do you prime with? Everyone seems to be fine with soft whisk brushes besides me. I use Scheutzen 3F, my pan has a thick hard black crust after firing. A soft brush doesn't work, I just upgraded to brass cup brushes for a Dremel so I can scrape that manure out.
