    silver solder underhammer pin lug

I am building an underhammer and I am attempting to weld the "pin lug" that holds the pin the hammer rides on. I have officially given up stick welding it :cursing: I am wondering if 20,000PSI silver solder would hold it. this 20,000PSI silver solder melts @ 1070 degrees, will mapp gas be hot...

    old shovel for spring steel

I cut the strip I was needing for the spring and shaped it. The design of this underhammer I believe is going to keep me from using a flat spring. This design has a hammer that pulls straight down. The hammer slides through a tube and when I put the flat spring in the notch I cut in the hammer...

    old shovel for spring steel

I checked out the shovel this morning and put a file on it. Believe it or not it is still fairly hard. I have to put quite a bit of pressure to get it to cut. I will still try to make a spring from it today after church, and if it wont work I am not going to worry about too much. I will still...

    old shovel for spring steel

When I mentioned it was untouched I meant it had not been cut yet. It is an old U.S. made shovel with termite damage :winking: I did however throw an old hacksaw blade the fire as well because I remembered hearing about using saw blades. I have it in coals right now while the fire was going I...

    old shovel for spring steel

Hello, I have read before that you can use the metal off of a shovel head for springs. I have one that I want to use for a spring, it is untouched and I was wanting to know if I should anneal the head before I attempt to cut a strip off for my spring. I am using this spring in an underhammer, I...

    breech plug question

The material I am using for the breechplug is 5/8" bar 1018. Do I need to use Kasenit on this after I drill it and thread it? Or can it be left as is? Thanks

    silver solder gas

Thanks, I guess I also need to ask what % silver should I use. I will be using it to weld my breech plug into my tang. The back side of the breech plug will is an unthreaded 5/8 shank and I have drilled the tang 1/2" deep to slide it in and then solder it. Thanks

    breech plug question

Dave, I will find an 18 thread somewhere. My 5/8" stock(for the breechplug) will be mild steel (possibly 1018). Do I need to use kasenit on it after I drill the flash hole and thread it? or can I leave it as is. Thanks again Tommy

    breech plug question

I have asked this before last year but I could not find it in a search. I have a .50cal blank that I am putting a breech plug of my own design in. What diameter hole/thread should I use in this barrel for the plug. How deep should the plug go into the barrel? Thanks
