    Time machine Hawken

I am one of those guys that responds to these crazy ads and tries to "help" them correct their knowledge. Usually, they don't respond.

    I love the classifieds

Even though there is currently nothing that interest me, I see a lot of neat guns that I would otherwise never get to see. Great source of info for learning.

Can you guys school me on grades of Hawkens? Quality, value, etc.

A decent condition T/C Hawken or Renegade will get you there with money left over for powder and accessories. The Hawken has more drop in the stock but has the crescent butt plate.

    How Indian flintlocks are made

Reminds me of photos of the old days at Springfield. Early 1903 rifles suffered from poor heat treating because they went by the color of the metal but had trouble being consistent due to poor lighting. Think it was any better when they made early flintlocks?

    Well I will tell ya...

I hate going to the club range and dealing with the Nija-Warrior Wanna-Be, black rifle shooters. I just shoot from the down-wind benches. I often get funny looks when I break out my 1880 TD carbine or my Sharps conversion carbine in 50-70. I actually had a guy tell me I couldn't shoot the...

    Woodsrunner Recoil?

As a general rule, I find that shotgun style butt plates as lighter felt recoil. Same goes for drop in the stock. I gave up on T/C Renegades as the limited stock drop put my cheek bone tight against the comb and felt recoil was more pronounced. Currently shooting a T/C Hawken but looking for...

    I have a .54 Minnie mold and a T/C Maxi-ball mold, if interested

Thompson Center 50 cal Hawken Flintlock...polish or not?

Someone used to make a solution to dull brass and make it appear blued

    An odd Deerstalker

While doing my daily check of classifieds, I cam across a guy selling a Deerstalker that had a half-round barrel. I have never seen such a gun. Special order/distributer run?

How long would you go when using spit patches without concern?

Never. I use the OxYoke pre-lubed patches in all muzzleloaders. I am showing my age but I used to use patches soaked in Crisco before the per-lubed ones came out. Only problem was that I stored them in 35mm film cannisters and after a while they would develop mold.

    Bore brushing.

FWIW, I shoot a soft lead bullet in both my original Springfield TD carbine and Sharps. I never get leading because I use a good BP bullet lube on the bullets. I cast them at 20-1 so just a hair harder than a pure lead ML bullet.

    Bore brushing.

Conical bullets can leave leading. Use of a good lube on the bullet helps. The worst thing is the plastic sabots. I don't want to advertise for anyone, but check out lead removal products. I have both powder fouling and lead removal from Bore Buster that I use on patches after shooting and...

    Barely any sparks

If changing flint position doesn't help, then look about rehardening the frizzen. There are several videos and posts on how to do it. If not your thing, a good gunsmith can.

    1853 Enfield bad range day

Shooting FFFg vs FFg will give you a bit more pressure and velocity. That should help to expand the skirt. Start out at 50 grains if shooting FFFg. A 5 grain difference in charge will often make a difference.

    1853 Enfield bad range day

Minnie balls can be had in .575", .578", and .580". I had one and it shot best with a patched round ball. Probably not what you wanted to hear. A new gun, and I have only had a few, required a bunch of patches covered in polishing compound up and down the bore before shooting for groups. They...

    Ball-Patch work-up advice

I still use the oxyoke pre-lubed patches. They are lubed with 1000+. Even at the range I run a bronze brush and a wet patch down the bore after a couple of shots. Powder fowling attracts more fouling.
