What mistakes have you noticed in movies/tv shows that happen in the BP era like Daniel Boone, Patriot etc?

Its always amusing to to see '92 Winchesters and '73 Colts in John Wayne's CW era movies. And it has always bothered me to see Jeremiah Johnson splashing around in the icy creek in leather boots. Even a city boy would know better. But then, he also bought a .36 caliber "real Hawken".

    Weather

I hunted once when the temps were about zero all day. Had to stop and build a fire about mid morning. The shortest day of the year and least solar illumination occurs on December 21. Can somebody please explain why the coldest days of the year happen after that when the days are getting longer...

Even with White Lightening vents I find I have to open up the flash hole a bit on thicker barrels.

TOW Hawken full stock plains rifle

Thank you. This rifle turned out quite well. Its a good shooter but it took me a long time to determine what load it likes best. Now I get excellent results with a .526 ball, .015" patch and 120 grains of FF Swiss. Its a heavy gun so the recoil is not too bad. Now, if I could only find somebody...

I made this one from TOW parts. Initially I thought there was a problem with the tang alignment but later discovered the pattern was made with cast off.

What Muzzleloading Stuff Did You Do Today?

Today I went hunting. Its the tail end of our late muzzle loading season. Took the full stock .54 Hawken this morning and a .50 Tennessee in the afternoon. I try to give all my creations an equal opportunity in the woods.

Hunting season here is now on pause until after Christmas. I took the opportunity to gold plate the front sight on my .54 Isaac Haines. Really helps sight definition in low light.

What Muzzleloading Stuff Did You Do Today?

Chaga, aka tinder fungus, aka inonitus obliquus is an amazing natural tinder for fire starting. It requires no special treatment other than drying and will catch a spark very easily from flint and steel. Its actually harder to put it out once lit than to ignite. The smoke has a pleasant smell...
