    Making an antler powder measure

I've posted this on some facebook groups and another forum page in the past. But for those that haven't seen this and like to make there own pieces this may help you some. I've seen examined over a hundred originals from super simple to really fancy. I was lucky enough to see Jim Dresslar's...

    Deep river rifle

Hatman, my steel and iron gets a good rusting from Dangler's browning solution then I simmer it in hot water till it turns black. Pull it out and scrub it back, usually with a green 3M pad and WD40 until I get the look I want.

A Kibler woodsrunner rifle I assembled and added a brass box lid and some carving to. Also some accoutrements to go along with muzzleloaders. Seems like I always have ten or more things I'm working on at any given time.

    Deep river rifle

Jedidiah the wriggle engraving is at the muzzle of the rifle. It's done with a wide flat graver that is rock back and forth.

    Deep river rifle

I have seen one or two originals but mostly studied photo's in Bill Ivy's book on NC rifles. The butt plate is two piece and brazed.

    Deep river rifle

Thanks everyone. Salty the box lid pivots on a wood screw and the spring latch is just like the usual wood lid spring. I do slim down the spring more on these pivot style lids.

    Deep river rifle

Here is a North Carolina Deep river school rifle that I'm just finishing up. It has a FCI barrel that's 46" long and .45 caliber. The lock is a Chambers late Keyland with Davis set trigger plate and internals with my triggers. All other hardware I made.

    Hard work

Thanks for sharing Phil. Yes it is hard work but that keeps my mind focused on productive things. I know the real work will start when I start setting logs.

Nice cabins guys. Phil C what kind of windows did you use? I'm pondering right now on what to try to use.

    Hard work

Lord willing I'm going to start a log cabin this winter. I've started dropping poplar trees and hewing them for the cabin. It's a good work out but therapeutic at the same time. This is also a great time to be in the woods.

    Bag knife

I made this little bag knife up from 1084 spring steel and hickory handle. I like it so much I may keep it at least through hunting season.

Here's my personal rifle for the last ten or twelve years. It's a .50 with a Rice barrel. Trying to get a new one built in .54 for a little more punch. Photo was taken by Ric Lambert.
