    Hickory ram rods

Not sure what kind of stain you used on the rod. I use Jim Kibler's stain which is like nitric acid. After staining I use some oil with soot mixed in it to darken it up more.

    Deep river

Here's a early Deep river school rifle that I'm working on right now. It's a .45 caliber and I think a 46" long barrel. It has a Chambers late Ketland lock on it also. All the mounts are my forgings.

    Hickory ram rods

Here is a hickory rod I made for a rifle that I'm working on right now. I never treat them with anything to make them more flexible. I just cut my own trees and split out sections to make rammers for my rifles. I know everyone doesn't have hickory trees to cut down but if you have a local saw...

    Pipe axes

The best way to attach the steel bit in a brass head is to dovetail and solder. Some of the originals were thought to have had the head cast to the bit. That would be the very best way but it's not an easy task to accomplish.

Here's a few pipe axes I've made over the years. Need to get another one made up soon.

    Breech plug install ??

The breech plug face need to bottom out on the shoulder in the bore at the same time the tang bottoms out on a barrel flat. If the tang bottoms out but not the plug face you will get crud built up in your threads and it will start rusting your barrel. This will cause many problems down the road.

    Early Iron rifle

Here's a rifle I built last year. It has a .54 barrel that is 38" long with a Kibler lock. The set triggers started as Davis triggers but I tossed the triggers that they came with. Made some new ones from 1084 steel and used the old springs. Every thing else I made in my shop.

    Patch box Inlet question

When I make my patch box I only worry about the hinge and finial matching my stock contour fairly close. I also put the bend in my hinge before cutting the knuckles. This way the hinge can have some bend and not bind or have gaps and still work. Since the butt stock has more than one radius to...

    Patch box Inlet question

I'll draw up a picture of the swage. I don't have one made at this moment. I make a new one from scrap wood as needed and then toss.

    Patch box Inlet question

Here's a little trick for bending patchboxes to fit your stock profile. You cam make an upper and lower swage from hard maple to match your stock. Place your box between the two swage pieces and squeeze them with your vice. This method won't leave any hammer marks in the box from bending.

    Opions appreciated.

The one thing actually two things I've found out with the three .32's that I have shot are...... The rifling needs to be wider than the lands. I had one barrel with narrow rifling grooves and it was a bugger to get to shoot well. The other thing is all of the barrels liked very thin lube on the...

    Need a new lock

The lock looks like the ones Dixie Gun works sold back in the 70's and early 80's. If you have a Track of the Wolf catalog they have their parts listed life size and you could match up a lock plate closer to yours. You can fix the one you have with a bushing in the lock plate and the tumbler may...

    High prices of gun parts

Jason at Rice barrel turns out ten barrels a day I've heard. It could be fewer you know how the grape vine is. He uses cnc machines to make them. Check and see what it cost to buy a quality cnc machine. Add on top of that all the other things it cost to run a business these days. Insurance...
