    early field rations

My younger brother retired from the US army as a general, and he has a Ph.D in French military history, believe it or not. He would give you guys an argument on the French army :nono:

    Wedges fall out on GPR

Order two PP0804 brass Ted Cash wedges from Dixie Gun Works. They're maybe 3/8" too long, but I installed them LtoR so they stick out some from the right hand side of my GPR.

    lubes

As I have access to non-additive home rendered hog lard, I use it as-is for patch lube and mixed w/beeswax, etc., for conical lube.

    Brass barrel wedges?

Post a picture when you finish, please. I just bought a brass sheet from TOW to make one for my Lyman Plains Pistol.

    50 caliber GPR percussion

    Why post megapixel pictures?

    .32 caliber barrel length

I suspect my 32 Crockett Rifle is capable of 2500 fps with a PRB, but if you shot a squirrel at that velocity all you'd have left is the tail. 1050 - 1100 fps works well on squirrels. You could easily get that or more with a 20" barrel.

    Lyman .54 caplock pistol

The manual for my Lyman 50 caliber also lists max for 54 caliber. It says max = 40 gr FFF. If yours is like my 50 caliber you'll probably find max accuracy at ~ 35 grs FFF.

    Lyman .54 caplock pistol

I'm not so sure about that. The 320 REAL is a pretty tight fit in my bore.

    Lyman .54 caplock pistol

I'm legal with the pistol for deer hunting here in Louisiana. A conical is a no-no. I loaded a 320 REAL as a test. As a further test, barrel down, I tapped the REAL-loaded pistol's muzzle against a wooden chair arm. A gentle tap. The bullet moved forward about 1/2". I repeated with the same...

    Lyman .54 caplock pistol

By the way, the Plains Pistol clean-out screw takes a 2mm metric hex wrench. If you use a 3/32" hex key . . . well. . . . Good luck. An 8-40 replacement won't work as it's too small. Next workable size up is a 10-32.

    Lyman .54 caplock pistol

I have the 50 caliber version of your Lyman pistol, and Pyrodex RS burns eratically, i.e., 200 fps ES. Pyrodex P burns fine. Plus gives ~100 fps more velocity. I suggest removing the lock and checking wood corners for clay-like deposits of powdery wood dust left over by the inletting machine...

    Better sights for Plains Pistol

I used a 1/8" round file and slightly lowered the rear sight notch. The pistol is now zeroed perfectly 1 1/2" high @ 20 yds.

    How is your cap supply?

My local Wal-Mart, Jena Louisiana, has Winchester #11 Mag caps for $7.99 per 100.

    Better sights for Plains Pistol

The new front sight is too short. Replacement on order.

    Better sights for Plains Pistol

I installed a set of Lyman European dovetail muzzleloader rifle sights on my Plains Pistol this afternoon. They fit just fine after a little safe file work. The white bead front and elevation adjustable white triangle rear are MUCH easier to see in dim light. I'll zero the pistol in the morning...

Patent breech in Investarms/Cabelas (Lyman, etc.)?

The instruction manual for both my Lyman GPH and my Lyman Plains pistol, both 50 caliber, says to clean the "powder channel" with a 38 caliber brush or a slotted tip cleaning rod.

    Reliability of long loaded C&Bs

One of my stainless ROA pistols has been loaded since 1993. I'll try it out in a month or two. I'll probably write an article about it, but for sure I'll post the results here. The story begins with my college garage apartment and a second story man at circa 3 am. All I had for defence was a...

True story: A crosseyed Choctaw friend of mine once met Iron Eyes Cody. He offered his hand and said, "Hello. I'm Iron Eyes Cody." She shook his hand and replied, "Glad to meet you. I'm crosseyed Rosie."
