    REMOVING THOSE BARREL MARKINGS

Tip from a newbie who has only drawfiled one barrel? If you get the light just right you can see the high and low spots. But to make it easier try this. I use common sidewalk chalk for my files. I found that by putting the chalk directly on the flats of the barrel it was quite easy to see the...

So this is how I begin on this rifle.

You should find the Formsby remover and finishes at the local Walmart. It will be in the Paint Department usually on the shelf above the Minwax Stains. Have yet to use the Tung oil finish on a rifle but have made hundreds of picture frames and used it.

    soldering brass

I've yet to try it yet. But have heard of using water base white out as a mask to protect areas where you don't want solder to stick. Then wash it off once soldered. Anybody tried it?

    GPR Under Lug Broke OFF

I would be mighty aprehensive of welding on the barrel. On another site Don Getz was recently mentioning someone had brazed lugs on one oh his barrels and he was never able to get the warp out I don't know how much heat it takes to warp a barrel and would not care to find out. I would see no...

Stuck - real good (bad) this time

once you have the rifle secured well you might try using impact to pull it. I remember back when all cars and trucks were rear wheel drive dad would tak a 12 ft chain to pull axles He unbolted it and put the chain on one of the wheel lug bolts. then whip the chain like he was cracking a whip...

    Carving Knife Handles

There is a knfemaker in the area that has an outstanding reputation in the carving community for the quality of his knives. I bought two blades and am about to make handles for them. I have some walnut scraps that will work fine. He has drilled two 1/8" rivet holes. Would the rivets be adequate...

    Track kit and storage

Just an offhand question on holding the barrel in the stock while storing. I've seen centerfire smiths use surgical tubing to hold barreled actions while glass bedding. And have used it to glue up irregular shaped objects while gluing. Is anyone taking a few wraps of surgical tubing? It would...

    Reaming to 50

Best advice I can give is to go over to Bookies site. Toad Hall Rifle Shop, He pretty well describes the process he uses. Get his book on the Iowa Rifle Bench and he shows exactly how to make the tooling to ream and rifle your barrel. Since He is one of the few who do it this way I'll post a...

I know we've beat this to death but?

Just letting my mind waunder a bit. Zonie has the right idea, I think. I have had one like he describes. There are different kinds of hones I have seen used on cylinders over the years. The one I'm thinking of was a simple shaft with three spring steel paddles or even two would work you fixed...

    breaking JB Weld

If you have the sight out and only have the inside edges of the dovetail to clean a safe file would allow you to clean it up. I would not heat it if filing, if the epoxy gets soft it will load up your file. You only need to get out what is visible and would prevent inserting a new sight. Note...

    breaking JB Weld

Have you got one of those reflector lamps that run abut $8.00 at Walmart? Put a heat lamp in it and concentrate the heat on the barrel and sight. If that won't work, I guess you would have to resort to a propane torch to heat it? Last resort would be to ignore it and file it out. Cut off wheels...

Question about Pistol Blank for project

Or depending on barrel weight, you might want to use a steel rod to balance barrel length?

    vices

One of the woodcarving catalogs a few yrs ago was listing a ball mount like mentioned, sorry I can't remember which one. On the question of the parrot vs grizzley from what I can tell they are likely the same with different paint and name.. I almost bought a parrot at the woodsmith shop in Des...

    Blue or Brown???

If you really want a wood butt plate. An alternative that I really doubt is PC can be seen on some REALLY high dollar shotguns. That is a wooden butt plate(with grain oriented oppsite that of the stock) often with a metal skeleton surrounding it. And the wood checkered. If I were to do that I...

    Blue or Brown???

A while back a bunch of guys I was with were talking about building a Southern Mountain. Mention was made of building it w/o a buttplate. One of the guys said "if you do that you will always worry and wonder, not if but when you will break off a piece of the wood." I have not since considered...
