Aperture sights on American longrifles - again

I'm 68 years young and my eyes have changed some in that time. If I couldn't use aperture sights I couldn't hunt or shoot!!!! I do use scopes on my long range center fire rifles and one pistol but most of my hunting is done at less than 100 yards and a peep with the aperture removed is great for...

    New Colerain barrel shooting left...

Just my simplistic old man brain working but why spend your time here when a phone call to the barrel mfgr would get you a whole lot of good info and maybe a new barrel? Like I say I'm just a stupid old man so dont bother replying as I wouldn't understand anyhow.

    GoJo for Cleaning Patches

I get my barrels squeeky clean with cold water and a dash of dishwashing soap. Doubt if it cost me a penny a trip. Use what you want but water has been around as long as guns have and it still works to clean them!!!!! FRJ

    mixed 3f & 2f

I just accidentally mixed some 3f & 2f in one of my horns and need advice on what to do. Should I throw it all away,or is it alright to shoot it as long as I use 3f powder charge data to keep pressure down? All suggestions gratefully accepted. FRJ

How do hobby makers finish the metal?

The original finishes were cold. The LMF cold brown from them or TOW works great and will give you a beautiful brown finish. I did my GPR with it and it looks great. FRJ

Need a new GPR 54cal l/h percussion barrel

I am thinking exactly that!!! A smoothbore would be nice to have for grouse and rabbits and since I already have the barrel it would make a nice combo gun with the new barrel!!!FRJ

    rifle to smoothbore

I'm putting a new barrel on my GPR due to pitting from Pyrodex and cleaning with hot water. I am thinking maybe the pitted barrel could be made into a smooth bore and I would have a shotgun about 28guage. Has anyone done this? FRJ

    It Shoots

A few months ago I purchased a 45cal flintlock L/H. It is a beautiful rifle with just the right amount of engraving and carving, very nice inlays and just plain pretty!!!! Only one problem, it wouldn't shoot!!!!!!It had a chip in the sear and wouldn't cock all the way. I had the chip welded and...

    Another lucky deer.

I have been reading this post and find it hard to believe that some people go to so much trouble to load a gun. I hardly believe that when our forefathers were fighting indians and such that they went thru all this rigamarole!!!!First off use only real black powder!!!!!)Pyrodex is hard to...

Need info on Numrich H&A Buggy Rifle

One note on the patching material. Use only natural fiber not synthetics!!!!! The syn's will melt and cause problems cleaning the barrel and will not shoot accurately. You can also use pre cut patches that are available from most if not all gun supply shops.FRJ

    New Rifle

Mail ordering primers and powder required a haz mat fee. If you order enought it isnt too bad but just one can of either one will be very expensive. I buy my powder 5# at a time from a local vendor and dont have any problems with caps except that I like the Remingtons and cant seem to find them...

Need a new GPR 54cal l/h percussion barrel

In response to Sr Chief: I have 2 muzzleloaders, the 54 GPR and a 45 custom. The 45 has never had anything but real black powder and cold water used on it and the barrel is shiney bright with no pitting at all. The 54 started life with Pyrodex and the boiling water treatment and not 5 minutes...

Need a new GPR 54cal l/h percussion barrel

Thanks Guys!!!! Mid South will special order it for me so thats the way I'm going. I could also get it from Lyman but that would be another $100.00 and I would rather wait a little bit and save the money. Also let me suggest that no one use Pyrodex or hot water to clean your barrel. FRJ

    50 or 54

I lived in ORYGUN for over 30 years and I believe the MINIMUM caliber is 50 that isn't to say its plenty. Minimum centerfire is 243 and I would never hunt elk with that either. In Washington state the minimum is also 50 but most anyone that hunts the big Roosevelts elk would want a minimum of 54...

    .50 vs. .54

I often times see this thing about lightweight people taking more of a beating than their heavyweight counterparts.Actually the exact opposit is true. A man my size(230#)doesn't move as well under recoil as a lightweight female (120#) and therefore absorbes far more of the recoil energy than the...

    average groups with prb

I have to use over powder wads with my hunting loads of 120gr 2F under my 54 cal ball. I use felt that I bought on line and a wad punch I also bought on line. If I don't use a wad my patch burns in the middle. I dont need it on my target and plinking loads that are under 80 gr 2f. FRJ
