Choosing the best rear sight height adjustment before start to filing the front sight.

Set it at its middle range and file it to where you need it. This will give you an equal range of adjustment up or down. But first determine whether you can afford to take the required amount of metal out of the sight, because you may have to deepen the notch as well. You definitely want to be...

    I bought a rifle kit

Man, that 42" barrel being straight like that, at .40 caliber.... I have a .36 rifle, of similar dimensions, straight barrel...when you're aiming, that front sight just keeps sinking. It is work to hold it up, and you've got to time your trigger pull to have it all squeezed out and trip it the...

    I bought a rifle kit

Is it a swamped barrel? What's the length?

    Northwest trade guns

The indians sure liked them...preferred them over rifles when trading. They were definitely onto something...

    Clogged nipple

You need to get some stiff pipe cleaners (tradition makes them), wet them with solvent, remove your nipple, and scrub the heck out of your flash channel. Curl them slightly if necessary to get them in the full depth. Use several, and scrub it until you are caught up on your cleaning. From...

    Sights

I like a good buckhorn. Those antelope prongs really seem to help with quick speedy sight acquisition. And they are allowed in all matches.

    Im new to BP.

Why? In short, to connect with our history, as smoothbores came first...another reason is the same reason our ancestors stuck with them even after rifles became available. They are more versatile: having adequate accuracy with a ball for deer or bear hunting, the ability to load with shot for...

    Custom heirloom pistol

That is my favorite style of pistol. Reminds me of my squirrel gun...what caliber is it? What is the length of that barrel? Looks like a 10" be extra careful when loading with that ramrod. It seems like the original. Grip it close to the muzzle and inch your loads down. You don't want to snap it...

    What was my mistake?

With a sidebreak pocket derringer, I once had a #10 cap blow an entire load of powder with a ball in front of it out of the barrel. I stood there snapping caps for a couple of minutes, and when i went to pick the nipple, and saw light shining through, it took me a moment to catch on to the fact...

    Field Cleaning

I wouldn't even boil the water...just takes extra time and energy handling a scalding barrel and finding a way to hold it without burning your hand. Use plain water, pretend it is your solvent. Couple of patches to soak the fouling, several brush strokes, squejee the residue out with several...

    What tools do you have?

I have a set of these, minus a few others in your picture. I never used them after buying them but sharpening isn't much of an issue for me, I'm pretty good at it... Supposing i got a stock blank...and it would be a complete blank... I'm guessing you need to mortice in the breech plug, lock...

    Unruly CVA Mountain rifle

Thats the thing, homemade bp is a touchy subject that this forum prefers not to approach. Aside from merely mentioning the topic, which is fine, It against our rules, however, for there to be any discussion of the processes involved in making it, or indication of where to find such info...

    Rifle sock or sleeve

Sock vs sleeve...how about a scabbard? They look better and offer more protection. They are more pricey, but you can also make one yourself...I find with leatherworking though, that you never save money when you do it yourself...it comes out even once you add the cost of materials to the time...

    Really neat photo

The first thought i had when seeing the photo was thats an owl...i zoomed in, and the first thing that stunned me was that he is decorated in the original tree-bark camouflage. The design of nature is nothing short of amazing.

    What tools do you have?

Do any of you guys have pictures of your basic stock carving tools? The idea is beginning to intrigue me.

    Unruly CVA Mountain rifle

I once had a finicky cva...i also didnt know as much about cleaning very early on. So can't say how finicky it would have been if i knew better... but i do remember it being finicky. I suppose its possible his alteration in powder processing made just enough difference to get the gun up and...

To cut or not to cut??

I would cut and round off and smooth to an aesthetic shape, and/or add a brass or copper end gap.

    What tools do you have?

I could see how that might be a challenge without power tools...i do have a hand drill that i used to make a ball board for patched balls... I don't see why i couldn't piece together a jig to use with it when the time comes though...i doubt i could do a straight hole all the way down without one.
