    Dixons Gunmakers Fair

Lookin' forward to it! I'll be the big guy with blond hair, beard, glasses, and a black slouch hat with a fur band around around the crown and a feather hanging off.

    Dixons Gunmakers Fair

The folks from another forum are planning a get together on Saturday at around noon, at the bottom of the wooden steps up to the store. Birdman will be there, hanging out by the flintknapper's marquis. How about the rest of you joining us? It'd make for some bodacious photo ops! :thumbsup...

    Clay pipe smoking

Most of my smoking is done with a cast clay bowl and reed stem. I found that my all-clay pipe tended to get kinda hot to hold, so I wrapped a couple layers of linen thread around the stem near the bowl, an inch or so long, to give me someplace to hold onto. I also wrapped some thread around the...

    Traditions Muzzleloaders

One quick word on style of gun; if you're looking for a longrifle, T/C and Lyman GPR's don't fit the bill. Good(maybe great) Plains and Mountain rifles, but I haven't seen them making any Eastern-style long guns. Regarding the Traditions, some may be poorly made. I believe the Penn rifle I have...

    first black powder gun?

A thought that no one else seems to have mentioned; if/when you go to a range where bp guns are being fired, see if you can get someone to let you shoot their gun. Some people would be happy to let a newbie get a shot or two in(properly supervised, of course!). This way, you could get the feel...

cleaning tip, just want to verify

I can't verify whether it'll work well or not, but be a little leery of the alcohol/peroxide combination; at certain strength percentages, the two combined make a form of rocket fuel! That's what was used by the WWII German rocket plane, the ME363 Komet. The stuff you'd be using probably isn't...

    Dixons Gunmakers Fair

Being as this is the first time I'm attending the fair, I got a couple questions; :hmm: Does anyone do any shooting there? Do people wear their period clothing, or is it strictly modern/civilian dress? Looking forward to maybe meeting in person some of the folks I've encountered here.

    Making blanks

For what it's worth, BAR regulations state that NOTHING goes down the barrel but powder during re-enactments, not even wads of any kind. I was at the anniversary of the battle of Monmouth last weekend, and there was plenty of noise from the muskets and cannon being fired! What you decide to use...

    going primitive camping with wife

My wife and I have been "semi" primitive camping for years; a modern tent(we don't have a period shelter yet), an airbed(found I can't sleep on the ground like when I was younger), and a modern cooler(which gets covered up when it oughta be). We do have plans for a more primitive looking camp in...

Do I need a nose cap, entry pipe and buttcap?

Okay, my opinion. How much of a hurry are you in to get the gun built? If you want to get it done, like, "RIGHT NOW!!", then find a ready-made buttplate you like. Or would you prefer something you made yourself, in which case find a design and learn how to make it. Bought or home-made, it all...

    Jacobsburg Rifle Frolic

Hey, Fiddler, your daughter has a wheel? She oughta get in touch with my Mrs, who has two of 'em. One gen-u-wine antique, and one made of pvc for spinning in bad weather. Daughter can contact her at purplkat @ optonline.net. She loves to talk spinning(do it for hours, if you don't drag her...

Do I need a nose cap, entry pipe and buttcap?

I'm no gunsmith, but I know there've been a lot of "Poorboy" type guns that didn't have any of those. Can't say how well they stand up. The Dixie "Tennessee Mountain Poorboy" that I owned had no nosecap or entry thimble(did have a buttplate, though) and didn't seem to need them.

    Sad state of retail "outfitters"

I had to drive over to the Hamburg PA Cabla's, to pick up the flint rifle a nice gentleman offered to give me. While I was there, of course, I looked through the muzzleloaders and ml supplies. Not too many guns. I did manage to buy a can of Goex 3f and a box of .490 roundball. Had to get the...

    As Homer Simpson would say......

Kinda makes an argument for having only flinters, doesn't it? :hmm:

    Working up a load

Remember that the British used some of the powder in the cartridge to prime the weapon.

    Need a Brazier....tired of dig'n fire pits!

Panther Primitives also offers a brazier. Haven't put the two photos together to compare, but I think they're different manufacturers.
