    Hard tack

I have some rounds of ship bisquit(what it was called during the 18th century, as it was mostly made for the British Navy. The term hardtack, I believe, was coined 'round about the Civil War) I made more than a year ago sitting in a platic bag on top of my fridge. Still harder than a rock...

    LOTM

Another thing about the Disney shows that used flintlocks(Davy Crockett, Treasure Island, Light in the Forest, and a few other colonial and pirate films) was that, no matter which type of firearm was used, from heavy muskets to small pistols, they always used the same sound for the firing of the...

    Cleaning Question

I usually found that a couple barrelfuls of hot water, followed by dry patches, then oiled patches, does the job pretty well. Then again, trying to clean your weapon, in public, using the "pee" method, could get downright embarrassing! :)

    TRINKET TRADERS

The "cheap junque" blankets, knives, cooking pots, etc, that the early traders sold to the indians, now cost upwards of hundreds of dollars. A Hudson's Bay 4-point blanket(alright, not really "cheap junk"!) now fetches about $250. Cast-iron cookware goes for #50 and up. Just goes to show that...

    Bees wax finish for wood

I've used beeswax, by itself, as a finish for wood, horn, belt edges, tin boxes(the Altoids tins, after you've burned off the paint but the box is still uncomfortably warm. Gives 'em a nice patina, and keeps 'em from rusting), etc. Rub a good amount on, let it sit for a little while, then...

    Basic Leatherwork Questions - Newbie

There's a whole bunch of variables to this question: what kind of knife; what kind of sheath, i.e. center seam, one-piece side seam, two-piece, etc; what kind of leather you want to use; do you want a period correct sheath; do you want your sheath sewn, laced, rivetted, tacked, etc; do you want...

    Traditions Pennsylvanian .50 Flintlock

Nope, this one's a Penn rifle for sure. I'd been looking at the Shenendoah. This one has a 40-41" barrel; the Shenendoah has a 38" barrel. The gent who gave me the gun said he got it several years ago. Then he got a custom-made gun, and stopped using the Traditions. When I mentioned on...

    Traditions Pennsylvanian .50 Flintlock

I have what I believe to be an earlier version of the Pennsyvania rifle; different patchbox and none of the extra inlays. Was given to me by a friend, and I haven't had the opportunity to shoot it yet. Next weekend, if I'm lucky.
