Smoothbore accuracy without a rear sight, HOW??

Let me quailify this by saying the 3" groups are off a bench and not all the time... As far as the archery anology, I'm a gap shooter or as Mr. Hill put it" indirect aiming"

Smoothbore accuracy without a rear sight, HOW??

I've been able to get 3" groups at 50 yards with my .20 gauge but it has a rear sight. The 12 gauge NW gun is giving me fits. I hate to dove tail an original Curly Gosmoski gun but... How do you guys who compete in the NW gun competitions do it?

    12 gauge NW Trade Gun

How does 1F work in a flintlock? This tradegun has a huge lock and since Matt aka: Lafin Dog worked it over the lock is a sure sparker. But would I be better served with FF?

    12 gauge NW Trade Gun

A quick check and that 4-dram load was for 10 gauge. For twelves the recomended load was 3-1/4 drams of 1F, that would be apx 90 grains of 1F. Would that equal apx 80 grains or 2-1/2 drams of FF?

    12 gauge NW Trade Gun

About one year ago I aquired, from a forum member, a Doliver assembled 12 gauge NW trade gun built from Curly parts. It has been quite a journey but I am starting to get a handle on this big bore flintlock. I have found 2-1/2 drams of FF coupled with a half inch cuoshion wad, a .715 roundball...

    Decision time

Seems to me any of your rifles are up to the task. Your .50 is your best shooter, use it. The problem is not your rifle selection it is your blind. Get out of the store bought contraption, develop your woodsman's skills and hunt! :hmm: Snow

    Squirrels with a .50?

My experience has been most rifles will hit the same POI with the same sight picture using different loads. Its just a matter of finding the right loads. I've a .45 that hits 1" high with 68 grains of FFF and gives the same with .45 grains. The reduced load is certainly more economical to shoot...

    PRB for Hunting

Intresting :hmm: , in my experience it was those heart shot deer that run off. I've seen heart shot deer go 200 yards plus but never had a lung shot deer go more than 60 yards. Roundball and broadhead consistantly gave the same results. Snow

    Muzzleloader's Safari Hunt

one word, Texas....Caged hunting is big business in the Lone Star state. Box stands overlooking electronic feeders with bells that signal the feeder is operating, Pavlov comes to mind. For the most part they are large tracks of ground, I believe the YO ranch is well over 100,00 acres. It has...

    Got him!

There you go. Just when the 'sperts had us all convinced you can't kill an elk with a roundball. You are aware of course you must use 150 grains of powder. :headslap: Anything less is inhumane! And where is your super sent killer, low UV, hide'em all Camo? Ya can't even get close to an elk with...

    Temporary Sight

I use a Johnson style peep sight mounted apx 3" forward of the breech. With the apperature open it works like a ghost ring. To afix it I just use 3M Blue tape. Works well enough for temporary use and does not marr the finish of wood or metal at all. Snow

    Just some NWTG musings...

I recently aquired a fine NWTG assembled by David Dolliver in 1985 from parts produced by Curley Gosmoski[sp?]. She is a slim yet stout girl with a walnut stock and tappered oct to round barrel. Though this not my first dance with a smoothy I am a true novice at this game. In shooting this...
