    Picked up some casting equipment

If you are having a problem with getting the mold to fill out completly when using pure lead add a bit of tin. 50/50 solder is 50% tin and you only need a trace of it to help the casting. I snip off about a 1 1/2" strip of solder and add that to the pot, with about 10 pounds of pure lead.

    Did it again

Muzzleloaders are addictive. The only known cure is more muzzleloaders. :v

Shipping a flint lock to Canada

In Alberta we passed a law enshrining the right to hunt, fish and trap for all Albertan's last year. They could have gone one step further and instituted the right to bear arms, as the Feds have no authority over property rights.

    patch lube

I was surprised to learn that "Mink Oil" is just anhydrous lanlolin. A lot of case lubes are made out of it as it doesn't deteriorate smokeless pwder.

    Buying lead

The adhesive stick on wheel weights are soft pure lead. The clip on wheel weights are alloyed with atimony and are much harder.

    Yukon Hunter knife

Looks like a copy of a Russel belt knife. They still issue them to the army.

Shipping a flint lock to Canada

In all fairness to our current federal government they have stopped funding to the gun registry. They want to scrap it all together but the opposition parties, liberal and socialist, won't let them.

what size ball to use in rocky mountain hawken

You could order .530 balls and find patch material that gives a good tight fit. Your bore could be a bit undersize.

what size ball to use in rocky mountain hawken

In my .54 Lyman I use .535 balls with .012 thou patches. The patch material is lightweight dennim. They work OK.

    New to this

I don't understand the term "poor boy" but I recently bought a Lyman Deerstalker, in .54 flintlock, and love the rifle. I believe they are under $500 in the US. I bought a Lyman Trade rifle in .54 flintlock a few weeks later, because I was so impressed with the Deerstalker, and they are $500...

Yet another range-session, CVA .45 "Frontier" rifle...

$60 dollars was a steel, and it looks like a pretty good shooter also.

    Myths dispelled

Actualy having the ignition point in the middle of the powder charge is very common. Take a look at the inside of a 105 howitzer round. They have a long flash tube running up from the primer inside the case. A lot of 20mm and 30 mm stuff have the same system. There must be some benifit to...

    To recrown or not

After that many years and that many round maybe the barrel fit to the wood is getting a little sloppy. Try glass bedding the barrel if the crown shows no obvious damage.

Yes, I think I will go shopping at the gun shop on Friday.

How loose should minie balls fit?

I should mention that last week I was ordering some powder measures and a powder flask from Caballas. I also tried to order some hornady plains conicals in .54. The lady taking my order said conicals were a restricted export item that the US government would not allow to be shipped to Canada...

How loose should minie balls fit?

The teflon tape sounds like a good idea as well. I have several rolls of the very fine stuff. There was a farm that used to raise buffalo commercially a few miles from my house. They used an old 30/30 winchester to kill them. One head shot always dropped them. Of course shooting in a coral...

    Joined the GPR club!

I like the finish on your stock! Next paycheck I am going to pick up a very nice used GPR, if it isn't sold before I get there.

    Bismuth Conicals?

I have an ingot of bismuth I was using for chamber casting on centerfires. It seems quite a bit harder than lead and melts in boiling water! I don't think it would make a good bullet, plus it is very expensive if I recall.

How loose should minie balls fit?

I should have stated both guns are 1:48 twist, ones a Deerstalker the other a Lyman Trade Rifle. The felt wad sounds like an answer to initial gas sealing. I cast the minnies out of pure lead and they are very soft. I can't try the felt wads out until the weekend, my "range" is in the back...
