    RIP Ken Crane

My long time friend and partner in the shooting sports, Ken Crane passed away this week. Ken is the one who introduced me to blackpowder, muzzleloading and the brotherhood therein. He was an excellent craftsman and artisan in period blades, clothing and history, and one heck of a fun guy. As...

.54 cal Hornaday 425 gn Great Plains bullets

Yeah, I’m glad I decided not to try and drive it any further. PM sent or I guess this forum calls it “conversation started”.

    Gun Cabinet - comments?

Maybe my thinking is wrong but I’m not concerned about the safety of my unloaded MLs being outside the safe. I just don’t seen them being a danger to anyone in my home. There’s no bp that is not locked up and let’s face it, how many even know how to load one? No laws in my locale require me...

How to create more interest in traditional muzzleloading.

I think the next apparent Administration will initially make lever action rifles, double barreled shotguns and revolvers more popular. Ultimately MLs will ride in on that coattail.

    Pitted barrels and shooting

My experience with .75 cal smoothbore (Brown Bess) is similar. Patches do tighten the group a bit and seems to provide it little more oomph. The lack of rifling seems to come into play beyond fifty yds, which I assume is due to air friction. Too fast a rifling twist on a PRB, like my .54 cal...

    Pitted barrels and shooting

Not sure if this an apples to apples comparison but FWIW I have an Eddystone Model of 1917 (P17 Enfield) that has a bore that looks like a sewer pipe. When I bought it I thought it would clean up, but not luck. Nonetheless, it’s battle accurate. I would freak out it any of my firearms...

    Cold! Still Shoot?

I did get out to hunt today, first day of ML season here. Just over freezing but a pretty steady 10-15 mph wind out of the north right in my face, so yeah it was a bit nippy. Not the kind of day I would go to the range for fun but tolerable out in the open.

Pedersoli .54 cal American Jaeger conical bullets?

I am going to try a lower charge with ball when I can spend some time at the range. I initially just went with middle of the road charge and elevation was spot on at 50 yds so I didn’t bother changing it. I like your logic and will lower the charge and see how that works. Appreciate your...

Pedersoli .54 cal American Jaeger conical bullets?

I’ll try to find a target if I saved one but similar to above at 50 yds. 3” max by recollection. @100 yds I couldn’t find a hit on stacked targets. I’m going by memory as this was 2 yrs ago and I’ve been in and out of commission and didn’t hunt last fall, and put this project off. I googled...

Pedersoli .54 cal American Jaeger conical bullets?

Appreciate that. One of the reviews at the link uses them in his dp Jaeger, so that’s encouraging. 535 gr; that’s a heavy bullet!

Pedersoli .54 cal American Jaeger conical bullets?

I built this flintlock from a kit 15 - 20 years ago. Fun smokepole and accurate with PRB over 80 gr fffg @ 50 yds. I decided to see what it did @100 yds and I don’t even know where it’s flying. Further research leads me to believe it’s fast twist of 1:24 is really made for Pedersoli’s .54 cal...

    Hi from Northern MI

Wanted to say hi and introduce myself. Muzzleloading isn’t my primary shooting interest but over the years have been involved in some reenacting and hunting and have a Brown Bess, Queen Anne pistol and an early American Jaeger, all Pedersoli flintlocks. Had a question and thought this site...
