Gift/ I wanna build one to match

My grandfather in law gave me this old gun of his for my birthday. Said he bought it years ago when he lived in Kentucky intending to mount it over his fireplace. As history goes he never did and the house burned down ages ago. He always had a liking for the blonde finished rifles but I...

You bet! It's the HQ of the NMLRA. Spring and fall nationals, plenty of other shoots throughout the year. They have everything not just BP, EVEN primitive archery. Woodswalks, trap and skeet, shillouets. I can't even think of everything. Plus there are awesome vendors there for the nationals...

I'm really glad there is a forum like this where we can all chat and us "young-uns" can learn! I really appreciate everyone's kind...

    First traditional build!

It will be my second muzzloader smoothbore, I have been doing some reading on loading for shot and round ball. Any starting recommendations or just the usual work up a load from 60/65 grains. It's a 16 gauge, measures.660 inside diameter. Using .640 roundball, probably just some pillow ticking?

    First traditional build!

Got it done in time to go hunting this fall! 16 gauge fusil. Learned a lot on this build. Really puts it into perspective how much work they did back then to make a good gun.

All I have left to do is the trigger guard, drill and tap the lock bolts and tang bolt and maybe inlet the side plate. Kinda nervous about the bolts, I've never tapped anything out before. Any tips? 10/32 bolts should I use a size smaller drill bit for the pilot holes?

Buttplate is done except for final finish, inlet the lock. Was wondering if yall think the lock is up against the barrel, I want a good fit! I'm not finding any color transfer so I think I'm good. Any tips for geometry of the lock bolts and tang bolt?
