Let's see your Belt or Rifleman's knife

I’m shoehorning bits of Scottish into my kit, so I got a non regimental dirk as a belt knife.

    Possibles bag

Or shooting bag or whatever you’d like to call it. I had some decent heavyweight leather some cotton strapping and neatsfoot oil, so I made one. Made a patch knife with a maple handle to go with it. The tomahawk idea I vaguely remember seeing a French Grenadier bag along the same lines.

    Tenderfoot has a project

Is the tang tempered? If not then I’d imagine heating the metal, bending it then a couple thermocycles would be better than bending cold…. Of course I could well be talking out of my ignorant butt.

    To carve or not

    That inlay work is breathtaking.

    Brand new

I do get the point of view that higher quality yields better out of the box results, and I get wanting to spare newbies the frustration. I also get that a cheaper starter will definitely take more patience and more fiddling with before it gets really reliable. So I figure I’ll get a Traditions...

    New in New Hampshire

Cheshire looks like it has nice outdoor ranges, but $225 is a little steep to join. I was kinda leaning towards Pemmi Valley. Outdoor range, a bit less expensive, and it’s where woodswalk and primitive biathlon events are held.

I like your style Squint. I’m the same with just about everything I own. I like to tinker. I like to fiddle with it. Back in my biker days, my bike seldom looked the same week to week… same as when I was into air cooled VW’s. The tinkering and problem solving is half the fun.

    Not an unreasonable suggestion

    Brand new

$800-$900 is more than I’m willing to spend on a lark, so a Pendersoli is out for a starter musket.

So any better suggestions for the budget noob?

    New in New Hampshire

Hi all, So I’m new to the whole muzzle loading thing, I’ve been reading and lurking for a couple months and decided to finally join the mayhem. My current history obsession is the French and Indian War, and am assembling and making the soft kit for Primitive Biathlon. I’ll do my best to...

    Brand new

Ok, so I’m brand new to muzzle loading. I’m getting into it to participate in Primitive Biathlon. Given that I’m new to the sport, I don’t want to spend a grand on a hobby that I may not get further into, and I certainly don’t want to booger up a high price kit. All of that jabbering out of the...

What got you interested in flintlocks?

My interest has come and gone through the years. I do like history and go through periods of passing fancy. What renewed my interest was learning about Primitive Biathlon. Wooden snowshoes, plodding through the woods, competitive shooting, period attire…. Yes please. A winter chance to be an...
