    touch hole is dangerous?

After reading this topic I scanned down the page and found another titled "Indian made flintlocks". The 8th post down refers to a youtube video about India muskets. The muskets in the video have a copper/brass part that looks like a shield to protect others from the flashhole blast. Apparently...

    Can he use pyrodex?

My son's load is 777 in the bore and Goex 4F in the pan. Works for him.

    Newbie with serious issue

If you opt for the grease gun method, be sure you get the correct thread on the grease fitting. Foreign manufacturers may use metric threads which may be close enough to English thread in diameter and threads-per-inch (TPI) to allow them to be screwed together with little effort but doing so...

    Load data for Swiss powder?

Has anyone seen load data for Swiss powder? I am looking for charts that include velocity and pressure data similar to the data provided in the Lyman BP Handbook & Loading Manual. I worked through about half the references found by the search engine but did not get any hint where this info may...

    Wedge keys...Lyman vs. T/C

I bought a GPR that had loose keys. I replaced them with TC keys which snugged up the fit and solved the problem. Sooo I think the TC are slightly thicker. They can be trimmed to length if necessary.

Storing Goex cans in outdoor shed

I looked into this same problem years ago. I found a reference that black powder is stable as long as it stays less than 160 F. I store mine in my shed in an insulated cooler. I used insulating material to fill the space between the powder cans and the walls of the cooler. This minimized the...

Corrosion-X vs. Barricade for rust prevention...

Is it necessary to remove the Barricade before shooting? If so, what solvent gets it out?

    My first flintlock.

I recommend a roundball twist rate. 48" is good and works ok but the 60" of the GPR is better. Whatever you choose, read and heed the advice in the item at the top of this forum. It is required for reliable operation

First trigger pull on my new flinch lock

Try replacing the flint with a piece of oak and dry firing. This cured my problem. I don't notice the flash any more and shoot much tighter groups with all my flintlocks.

    broken bore brush

I used a coat hanger wire, bent it into a corkscrew on one end and twisted it onto the brush and it pulled out easily. I got this idea from another forum user. Sorry I don't know who. To prevent this in the future I don't buy brushes with a crimped connector between threaded fitting and the...

    Rem Oil or Bore Butter

I had my TC Hawken with a gm 50 drop-in barrel to the range yesterday. It was preserved after the last cleaning with Sheath. I forgot to run an alcohol patch through the bore to get out the Sheath. I loaded and fired 10 rds and noticed that there was much less BP residue in the barrel than...

    Green Mountain 58 caplock barrel

I just received a call from Midway informing me that a GM58 barrel I ordered in Dec 2008 has arrived at Midway and will ship today. They wanted to confirm that I still wanted it and, of course, I do. Roundball had a post a month or so ago, quoting GM Management's intention not to produce any...

    58 cal TC barrel

I went through this drill in November. TC will get you a barrel in a few weeks if it is a standard item, i.e. 26" long, 1:48 twist with QLA. If you want one without the QLA it is a special order and can take several months. Green Mountain offers drop-in barrels for TCs. They are 32", 1:70...

    Sling on a Hawken

The front sling attachment point can be an Uncle Mike's Quick Detachable Super Swivel #1051-2 which is for 1" slings. It is for clamping on the ammo tube on a lever action like a Marlin 1894 and will fit around a ramrod thimble with an OD of .540 to .590.

    Black Powder Solvents

I have used "Black Powder Bore Cleaning Solvent" purchased from TOTW. I have squirted it on a black, dirty patch and then found the patch gets cleaner with more passes down the bore. This indicates to me that if this stuff cleans the residue off the patch it is doing the same thing with the bore.

    BP winter temperature storage

I store mine in an outside shed way down south here in Pennsylvania. Cold temperatures are not a problem but deterioration will start when the powder gets over 150 F. It never gets that hot in my shed. Keep it sealed up and it will keep forever.

    Lyman GPR Cleanout screw

My experience is that removing the screw is useful in cleaning the gun. I use a choke tube grease on the threads when I install the screw. I don't tighten it and so far it has not gone anywhere.

Lyman Great Plains .54 cal Loads

My load is 90 3F, .530 ball w/ .018 ticking patch lubed with either crisco or Hoppe's 9 lube. I use it for everything. Lyman max loads per their manual are 120 gr 2F or 100 gr 3F. Have both flint & caplock. Both are great rifles.

    Cap keeps getting stuck

It only happens to me about 25% of the time but when it does I need a tool to pick it loose. I agree with busktail. Getting a pick is the answer.

    Bullets (beginner) T/C Hawkin rifle

45 cal pistol bullets, 250 to 300 gr. have produced best results for me. They are more accurate than PRB but the PRBs are a lot more fun.
