    Need ideas....54 cal Flinter

My brother hunts with a 1803 Harpers Ferry rifle, he kills as many deer as I do with my "custom" rifle. All in all a very nice rifle.

    Customizing a Pedersoli

    Very Nice!

Will a flintlock spark in very cold weather?

I agree got hit by a rattler once but he did not get through my boot. I still made my best ever 100 yard dash.

Anyone use that flintlock cleaning clamp/tube from TOW?

I have used the TOW cleaning clamp for several years, it depends on the rifle. On one of mine it will not seal, however if it fits the rifle it is a great time and mess saver.

    Changing priming powder

The next ridge in my experance :headslap:

    Projectiles

Work up your loads until you find the sweet spot. In my .54 Longhammock barrel that was 75gr. Take your time shoot a lot and enjoy the rifle. Don't over think this, as with all rifles shot placement is the most important. Putting the ball where you aim is more important than a little extra FPS.

    Projectiles

While a lot of people look at trying different projectiles in traditional muzzle loading firearms,( I have done it my self) I have found that round ball loads do all that I need. They are cheep, accurate and have killed game for hundreds of years. Enjoy your rifle.

    Cleaning a flinter?

I have a flint cleaning fitting from TOW it is a "C" clamp with a rubber seal that clamps over the touch hole a plastic tube to place in the hot water, Works great and helps with the non removable barrels.

    .54 Caliber Accuracy

All rifles are different, my 54s group better with 3f than 2f, the velocity seems a little faster. However the difference at hunting ranges does not appear great enough to matter.

    .54 Caliber Accuracy

While all rifles are different my hunting loads are 75 gr of 3F in my .54, have had good results so far.

    Rain and the Flintlock

The best method I have found in a rain is to use a shooting house and change the priming often. Shooting in the rain is trying practice helps.

    barrel length

My main hunting rifle has a Long Hammock 36" barrel, A short barrel is handy in woods or a blind. I believe it would be a great rifle.

    a little ffffg thing

While I normally hunt with 4f as my priming charge. I have used the 3f on the range and I have not really noticed a difference as long as I use the same amount of each powder.

    .54 barrel length

I have a Lancaster with a 44 inch barrel and a Early Virginia with a 36 inch. While I like the looks of the 44 inch swamped barrel best, the shorter is my main woods hunting rifle.

    Shooting The Iron Pennsylvania

Looking good, I am thinking of the Iron Pennsylvania or a Southern from TVM as my next rifle. I will be ordering a .36 for small game hunting.

    Tennessee or Iron Pennsylvania?

I do not know really how HC/PC the TVM Early Virginia is I had my rifle build for a deer rifle. Matt gave me his advice on what he felt I needed with the info I gave him. The rifle is a great hunting rifle at a price I could afford. That is what I wanted.

    Tennessee or Iron Pennsylvania?

The early Virginia rifle is what I went with (10 years ago) as my hunting rifle. I have a 36" half round barrel and it is a joy to carry. The deer hate it
  19. R

    Tennessee or Iron Pennsylvania?

ClickFlash, Not wanting to get into the HC/PC thing you may want consider butt style. If you want a .54 I would not pick the Tennessee or the southern mountain rife there thin butt plates would not be very comfortable with heavy (hunting) loads. When I ordered my last rifle Matt talked me in to...

New to me CVA Mountain Rifle .58 Caliber

I have a .50 that my parents gave me in the early 70s for Christmas. I killed a number of deer with it over the years. For the last several years I have hunted with a 54 Flint but a co worker just bought one so I may need to get my old one out to shoot with him.
