Two of those knives are with me in Alaska!!! Love them! Our lodge is knocked down for the winter, now if the weather cooperates I can get out of here. 70 miles with my boat and the last hour is a long Bristol Bay...not fun in Big Winds in which we are having at the present moment. Scheduled...

And Truly, the time these guys put into pounding medal, cutting/sewing leather, making sure they are deer skinning sharp...they should go for much more money!

    Patch knife carry

50/50 mix of pure 100% neatsfoot oil and Track of the Wolf's Mink Oil. I used to use 100% Tracks Mink Oil, but found, just as effective and less messy the 50/50 mix. Not easy mixing it all, but in the long run works for me.

    Patch knife carry

I hate fumbling around looking for my patch knife (Thank you @TwoFeathers for two great, xtra sharp patch knives), takes two hands. I had Two Feathers make me a sheath with tabs so I could sew on to my bag strap for my .40 Flinter, Then under a little instruction from Two Feathers, I made...

SOLD Small Elk antler pan primer.

Love mine from Two Feathers, think I might need two, one for each rifle. I'm in remote Alaska for 4 months or I'd scoop it up!

    Flints

As they get used and shorter, I'll either double leather them or a small stick behind the flint to push the flint forward and get that extra few shots or so out of them

    Flints

I think it depends on the flint, I've had some that cracked bad and unusable after 10 shots and have had a lot of them last 40 to 50 shots or more with a little knapping in between.

    Flints

Tracks are pretty good, but you have to ask to hand pick them to keep the humped ones out. I also have gotten good flints from Stonewall Creek Outfitters. https://www.stonewallcreekoutfitters.com/flints/ and Heritage-products.com

    Why .40 cal?

They're sweet and easy to shoot, "with" a very smooth crowned muzzle, I can easily shoot a .395 ball with a very compressed .018 denim patch (10 0z Denim), cut at the muzzle, mink oil lube.

    Why .40 cal?

LOVE my .40 Flinter. And I love to eat Squirrels. With 20 grains of 3f, no meat destroyed with a 'decent' shot. As others have stated deer at archery range. Coyotes are next on my list. The squirrel pic is from my last outing a few days ago, and I missed a couple dang it...my fault.

    Flints

https://www.stonewallcreekoutfitters.com/ has a nice selection of flints (and balls), that can be purchased by each or bag of 50 for under a hundred bucks. I've got a couple of bags of English and French. Track of the Wolf and Heritage Products also great flints.

Frustrated - Hopefully just the growing pains of a newbie

It couldn't have been stated better that water is your friend when it comes to black powder. I shoot a lot, both my 40 and 54 flinters. And it always amazes me, when my locks are dirty and full of burnt black powder residue after a day of shooting, how quickly they clean up with tap tepid to...
