Ferguson rifle - Round ball size choice?

Hey guys, I’ve got a rifle partially made up from years back that I’m looking to try and have finished. But I need to order the round ball mould. It’s rifled and the bore diameter is .797. It’s not a muzzleloader although it is a flintlock. Has a chamber cut so don’t need to worry about...

    Stuck clean out screw

This is what I do also. Get plenty of suction and cleaning power sitting it in a bucket of water and just pulling up and down on the cleaning rod with a strip of cloth on it.

Buying a completed Wheellock lock? or a complete firearm?

May I ask about what the price runs?

    Dikar .50

The worst part is after taking it apart I then did the exact same thing 3 more times in a row. I kept forgetting how I had it *blushes* Thanks, I’m hoping it goes alright with round ball.. off the top of your head any idea what the twist rate is?

    Dikar .50

Wh What patch/ball diameter/load does yours like? As for that spring mentioned - first time I put it back in the wrong way..it sure does lock up the ram rod doing that. Had to pull the gun apart to get it out and fix it.

    Dikar .50

Here’s my one and only muzzleloader. Haven’t taken anything with it but once I get it shooting (last time I had a go with it it was grouping like a shotgun. I’m sure that was me as I’ve since been told the patches are wrong material, too loosely threaded etc). So now I’ve picked up some ticking...

    Ok! Patch diameter..?

Thanks guys! Something I like about this forum is I get many varied answers from across the board. Different experiences, different methods, same results. Learning what different people prefer and why can help decide on a way that best suits myself also. Cheers for the answers :)

    Ok! Patch diameter..?

Hey guys, So, another beginner question: what diameter should the patch be for a .50 muzzleloader? I’m aware of the various thicknesses of materials and their rolls, but is there a rule of thumb for diameter of the patch? I have a 13/16” punch that I use for loading the 10 gauge (cartridge)...

Straight Peanut Oil for Patch Lube?

I picked up some heavy ticking, 2 different oils (peanut oil and Spanish olive oil), some beeswax, and this furniture balm - gunna probably give each a go this weekend if I can get a break from uni. Fingers crossed..

    Baby Wipes

No kids for me yet but grew up in cloth nappies. I don’t really care about using traditional methods for day to day shooting. If I was going to a proper event then I would use traditional though.

Straight Peanut Oil for Patch Lube?

Yeah Dave, that’s what I meant. Hmm so lube type isn’t super critical, it’s just more important that it’s there then? What’s a good recipe of beeswax/olive oil? I won’t be going out in any freezing temps. All the things online I read just say “a mix of beeswax/olive oil” and don’t give...

Straight Peanut Oil for Patch Lube?

Hey guys, Read about people using many, many different patch lubes, including straight plant based oils. Peanut oil has a higher burn temp than olive oil so some people prefer it. Some mix it with bees wax and some just seem to use it straight. I’m wondering if anyone’s given straight peanut...

    Very stupid, very lucky

Poor Diesel went missing though.. suspected either murder or suicide. Back to muzzleloaders - does anyone else wince when they see someone smash the ramrod down a hundred times whilst saying between hits “you..have..to..make..sure..it’s..seated..firmly..against..the..charge” lol

    Mulberries

I’ve got a white mulberry in my yard. Only a young tree. I wanna put in a regular one also. Probably after winter. Also someone mentioned wine. I picked this up last year.

    "Flash in the pan"

I love the moment when the pans ignited, the charge is, then as it leaves the muzzle it blasts back out the flash hole too. Super cool to see in slow motion. That mini cannon is adorable!

    Very stupid, very lucky

It’s called dieseling and can happen from an overlubed gun or one that has a bit of oil in it still. :)

Cap popped, rifle didn't fire, until later

I’ve seen similar. Good 30-60 seconds from click to bang in a .30-06. Was mil surp ammo, though.
