What Muzzleloading Stuff Did You Do Today?

Completed the restoration on this beautiful little vintage Millers Falls model 1700 2.5” antique vise I picked up last week while visiting antique stores in the NC Mountains for the fall leaves. I also found some reproduction decals and applied them now that the new paint has cured. There’s...

Thank You, it’s finished with Fiebings Med Brown leather dye and some Renaissance paste wax

    Question on poured pewter

Those look very nicely finished. Did you pour them on the antler or cast them and install them? Did you drill “pin” holes into the antler end to help secure them?

    Question on poured pewter

If you mean the very thin, faint brown line between the bolster and antler, it’s just a burn/heat line from the hot pewter contacting the antler and the stain highlighted it.

    Question on poured pewter

The finished result. Hope this helps. I wish you much success on your project! Be sure to post pics. We’d love to see them.

    Question on poured pewter

Then file and sand down to the antler diameter. This procedure gave me a great result!

    Question on poured pewter

I then added several wraps of tape just under the groove to increase the diameter of the poured pewter. This will “build out” the pewter and give you more room to work any errors. Then make a tape “well” around the antler to hold the pewter. Because of the wraps you made under the groove/shelf...

    Question on poured pewter

Yes this is one I made back in April. I don’t have any pics of doing the cap but I do of the bolster which is pretty much the same procedure. What I did was cut/filed a square groove all the way around the antler to give the pewter some overlap and I believe it gives a better result (no gaps)...

    Soft Brass for Sideplate needed

I see you found what you needed and like Larry (Omaha) I have bought this on Amazon, free shipping with Prime, so $14.99 seems like a good deal considering delivered in two days and shipping would run a couple bucks...

What Muzzleloading Stuff Did You Do Today?

My Dewalt, DCD708, compact, 20V lithium ion battery, brushless motor, 2 speed, 0 to 1,650 variable speed, 1/2“ chuck, portable mini lathe. Oh, it drills too. 😂 Yes I’m envious! Very nice. Maybe one day!

What Muzzleloading Stuff Did You Do Today?

Shot the English sea service pistol today. The resoled frizzen worked perfectly after switching to a new English flint, lol! I used the rivet method for attaching the new sole. Also widened and polished the pan. Throwing great sparks now and getting those nice “hot balls“ sitting in and falling...

What Muzzleloading Stuff Did You Do Today?

Stained the new ball pouch with Fiebings med brown stain and made a maple plug. Decided to use it for the smooth rifle and sea service pistol since they are .62 caliber and this holds 10 to 12 balls perfectly! Just enough.

What Muzzleloading Stuff Did You Do Today?

Been wanting a small ball pouch for the .50 rifle and pistol, so I whipped out this little bag in about an hour and used the air compressor trick again. Worked perfectly. Just wrapped tape around the nozzle to seal it up and make/keep the opening the right size. This will fit down nicely in my...

Where to get a baby sized powder flask?

Totally agree, sometimes you just got to make what you want because it doesn’t exist or is not quite what you want or is stupid expensive. (That is IF you like to and want to make them). I made these small “priming horns” from inexpensive pet store ”chew” toy antlers/horn. Most are less than 4”...
