    Obviously cut down, but by whom? Early CW a lot of those were cut down for cavalry use by CS. After the war, some were cut down to sell as cheap shotguns to poor folks. Still, it has it has history all its own.

    Well the lathe was already 100 years old and Eli Whitney came up with or improved the milling machine around 1818. The shaper goes back to the late 1700’s as well. Most of todays machinist could most likely walk into the old Colt factory and go right to work.

    “ Is chain fire more likely from the front end with ball or conical bullet ?” Neither. They both shave lead. Conicals have a rebated base to fit into the chamber, thus assuring proper alignment, thus proper lead shaving.

    I’m really not sure I see a problem with a plugged threaded hole in a barrel. A) The chamber end is threaded and plugged. B) The percussion nipples are threaded and screwed into the barrel. C)Percussion drums are threaded and screwed into the barrel. D) Many flint guns have touch holes...
