Traditions Kentucky Rifle, really not a bad gun

I love my Traditions Kentucky rifle. Built it from a kit, and went for more of a trade gun look ; a no frills working gun of a 1820's free trapper. It's been accurate, reliable and a great value , I think I paid around $350 a few years ago. My Traditions Hawken (cap lock) is scary accurate ...

    Birchwood Caseys Perma Blue

The BC Super Blue works better on a wider range of steels. If metal is prepped properly it produces very satisfactory results.

    Save your money...

Good ol' water , but before I leave the range and while the bore is still warm I run a few wet/dry patches of Hoppe's 9 Black Powder cleaner down the bore and wipe the pan etc. down. It works well, as one time I didn't get a chance for a through water cleaning for a few days and bore was still...

    Unbeatable bore rust

Are you sure it's rust ? Sometimes after a few weeks I'll run a dry patch down the bore and it has light orangeish /brown streaks that I don't believe is rust but either leached lube from patches or oxidized oil from petro based gun oils, etc. Even light flash rust will feel slightly gritty...

Trying the mystical "Cut in Half" round ball shooting for accuracy...??

Awesome video Mark ! I did cringe a little when you started hammering that ball on the hawk. The machinists in me wishes a lead ball can be wired in half on an EDM. It would make two perfect halves of equal weight and smooth flats with no deformation. I've used EDM's to wire steels, aluminums...

Round Ball performance story and question

A few year ago I shot a doe, slight quartering away, at 20 yards with PRB and 50gr. of FFFG from a 34" barreled flintlock. Blew through both shoulders, lungs, clipped top of heart and dropped in 30 yards. Maybe not the best load at 100 yds. or larger game, but most my shots are 75 yds and less.

Birchwood Casey Brass Black miserable failure !!!

Rough it up with a green scratch pad , clean with alcohol and apply per directions. I've had good success browning/blacking brass with BC Super blue.

    Touch hole insert

I would have to respectably disagree. Unless your barrel in made of pot metal or you're torqueing the liner to 200 ftlbs. you are never going to wear out your threads. If you know anyone who wore out their threads to the point they had to retap the threads they have done something terrible wrong...

Storing black powder in a shed

I would think a tightly capped can of powder would be air tight.

Storing black powder in a shed

This is what I did also, although I may have over done it ( something I tend to do) . I made a chest from 1 1/2" thick wood lined with 1/2" fireproof drywall, then lined with sheet metal on all sides. The lid has a lip around it and sits on top so it just lifts off. no hinges or latches. IF and...

    Conical help

I just got a copy, the 1979 edition, from the local used book store. You are correct it is an invaluable reference.

    Conical help

70 to 80 grs. of 3F would be close to 90 grs. of 2F and will have a bit more punch . I would advise against using 4F as a main charge, that's a lot of pressure inside a barrel.

Bore polishing to help with fouling: it worked!

I couldn't imagine dressing a deer out in that kind of heat and having to rush to get the meat on ice before the flies get on it. Usually I'll hang the deer in my barn for a few days, if temps stay between 32* and 45*, before I butcher it.

    Conical help

I shoot round balls most of the time, but the Hornady 385 gr. Great Plains Bullet is a solid performer in my Traditions 1:48 Hawken. 90grs. of 2F , average around 2" groups at 50 yards and packs a punch.

What is the deal with the fouling ring

Maybe try some 3F powder. I use pre lubed cotton patches lubed with "Wonder Lube" and pillow ticking lubed with Mink Oil and haven't had any issues.

    ShipStation Orders

Likely it was ShipStation that got hacked which is a 3rd party shipping service used by many vendors.

Bore polishing to help with fouling: it worked!

Not sure how cold it gets in South Carolina, but up here in Indiana it can be well below freezing during hunting season , sometimes single digits. That soap and water patch would freeze up for sure, I use TOW Mink Oil for my hunting patch lube, stays pliable even below zero.
