    Sight movement

For the OCD type these sights don’t wander once set. Find your load then set the sight with out screws or clicks! Most people never need to or actually adjust iron sights in day to day use. IMG_0678 by Oliver Sudden, on Flickr

    Other than Hoyt......

Wished I knew, he’s off my list. Nice guy but the work he did for me wasn’t acceptable.

Got some issues with my original P53

A turn screw is all it takes to remove the lock, place it on half **** turn the screws out a couple of turns then tap the heads with the handle to begin moving the lock out. Remove the lock and clean it and look to see the condition of the parts. A photo in good light to show us will improve any...

    Brass frame revolvers

I shot a couple of brass frame Colt style pistols loose back in the late 60s when a brand new Navy arms G&G cost $60. Bought a steel frame one and shot it a lot more till trading it off. If you need a brass frame to look like a confederate then also buy a steel frame for shooting. The...

Help a newbie understand what went wrong...

The only way I think would result in this is if the load was loose. With the slug well off the charge the pressure had a lot of volume to expand in until it pushed the slug out of the barrel with out causing any damage. Signs of that happening is an unusual dirty bore after the shot.

    BP Kit

With a “bunch” of gift cards it makes good sense to get the kit from Bass Pro. The half stock rifle is good starting point and will serve you well to satisfy the building bug. Definitely get the percussion model!

    Hard TRIGGER PULL

If you like I would take a look at your lock.

Davis replacement trigger set for Hawkins style rifles

The nice thing about set triggers is with the unloaded gun and the hammer fully down you can practice setting the triggers and will find that they can be safely set with no noise at all. Lay a finger on the front trigger and pull the rear to set it. Before releasing the rear remove the finger...

Davis replacement trigger set for Hawkins style rifles

I haven’t tested them side by side but set triggers that are working properly will click. The strength of the springs has the greatest effect.

The “or this” but more of a radius.

    Hawken L&R Hooked Breech question.

I blend the transition of the treads to the bore with an effort to not have a sharp edge. It’s import to seal the threads to the breech. E3E49713-A60B-4D99-AFD5-B7BA087614C4 by Oliver Sudden, on Flickr There is no sealer on these threads but there is old carbon at the edge. After 40 odd years it...

    How to polish this sideplate

Here’s an example of a poorly inlet one can still look pretty nice. I got this finished rifle and reworked nearly every thing to include the side plate. Don’t get overwhelmed just take it one cut at a time. Zoom in to see the filler. IMG_0513 by Oliver Sudden, on Flickr

    How to polish this sideplate

Don’t neglect to file the edges with a little draft so you can have sharp clean inletting.

What can I use these for?

As far as period correct, there wasn’t any exotic rams out here in the early 1800s.

    Percussion Lock ID

That lock appears to be from a double barrel shotgun. The tip of the sear has been broken off as well as the damage to the tumbler. Coat it with oil while you figure out what to do with it.

    Help with Hawken Identification.

If you decide to refinish the metal originals had color case hardened locks, breech and tang as well as some other parts. Barrels were blued and the finish was a polished mat texture. Here’s a photo of an original in pretty good condition. IMG_0758 by Oliver Sudden, on Flickr

    Blanks Harvested for Black Powder

$70 worth of cartridges for 2 ounces of powder is poor economics. Of coarse your old cartridges would probably bring more. Too late now. https://www.luckygunner.com/38-s-w-146-gr-lrn-magtech-50-rounds
