    questions about slat canteen

Here’s one trick, cut a screw type hose clip in two ad attach the seperate bits to-the band well past where you want the join, use solder or a really strong glue [for easier clean up] then drill and pin the band through the joint well into the wood. They could well be copper rivets but there...

    My 1863 Starr.

Not yet but I have a Lee double cavity mould in .312 that I’m going to machine out in one cavity for the Starr conical, or rather a conical for the Starr, going to incorporate a grease groove.

    Engraving chisel

Probably old hat to most, but interesting nonetheless, here’s a link to a chisel drawing by my old mate, the late and great, Lynton McKenzie. of engraving fame [and a keen muzzle loader] http://engraverscafe.com/LMCK/handout_1.pdf Edit. The instructions came up as well.

    questions about slat canteen

Well, they look lke wood screws, so if you can’t get a decent grip on them then recut the driver slots and screw out. Tip, use a new hacksaw blade with a bit of something comfy wrapped around it, much more control than in the saw frame.

    fake or good?

I missed that, first one that I’ve seen on a European gun, plenty on Oriental ones though.

    Would you trust these threads?

Here’s a much better drawing than mine 😀😀 I make all my nipples that don’t engage with a flat or tapered seat as in the manner illustrated. Edit, And my thanks to OLUT who led me to the above illustration.

Thank you indeed, the illustration of the Enfield nipple was what I was looking for when I found his thesis.

    1853 Enfield

For a good and long read on the manufacture of this rifle and lots more see https://eprints.hud.ac.uk/id/eprint/35383/1/FINAL%20THESIS%20SMITHURST.pdf Over 300 pages, that’s as far as I had a quick look.

    Would you trust these threads?

That nipple with its flat base screwed into a hole that has no face for it to contact is a recipe for disaster. A nipple that screws into the type of bolster threads illustrated should be bored out so that pressure is forcing the threads to tighter engagement. Please excuse the drawing.

    Odd powder drum threads

If you do get a very close match try running a bolt in before you re-tap as the bolt will tend to move metal whereas the tap will cut thus removing some of the thread.

    fake or good?

Counter sunk screws don’t look right either.

    Odd powder drum threads

As it’s a Spanish gun the threads will, almost certainly be Metric. 3/8 , 20 is a BSF size
