    My 1863 Starr.

That’s how I’ve always understood it, the Second Amendment doesn’t confer the right to keep and bear arms, it recognises that Right. Were the Second abolished tomorrow the Right of the people to keep and bear arms would remain, but there’d be a mighty civil upset, to say the least.

Original percussion hammers - cast, forged, what?

All that Philip said; 60 years ago Mick Smith, ln Sydney, had lots of original rough forgings of muzzleloader bits, particularly hammers and standing breaches. Over the years I used a number of these, the hammers were usually some sort of steel and the standing breaches were iron. Repairing...

That’s why I say guard your Second Amendment. Happy is as happy does and only being able to eat cashew nuts and not chocolates though irksome is better than not nibbling at all.

    I gave in to

So do I, haven’t shot it yet, but soon and it fits the flap holster that I made for its 1873 successor about 50 years ago.

Thanks Chris, we first met, metaphorically speaking, when some incautious Lib politician set up an opinion forum on gun laws and got more than he expected😀😀.

Does anyone make/sell something like a snap cap cone to dry fire a revolver?

Just that it helps stop rust although it can cause discolouration.

    Safely firing an antique gun

Looks like it’s done a fair bit of work and a new nipples woUld be an investment , note the burning of the wood in rear of the nipple, also if you fit a nnew nipple make sure it is internally coned, don’t use a flat ended nipple unless there is a seat for it as on most revolvers.

Just so, you’re spot on, but I prefer leather as it retains oil well

On the Starr the cylinder can be revolted with the hammer down but the nipples can be felt scraping across the hammer face. The Tranter hammer sits well clear of the frame when resting on a nipple and contacts the frame with the cylinder removed. See photos.

    Keeping an 1858 loaded indefinitely

As it is now illegal for me to keep any firearm loaded it is a moot point, however the advice that I got from the gentleman who gave me my first Navy Colt was to drip a little candle wax on the ball and the cap thus sealing them or to use shellac; a modern quick dry product would be clear...

Does anyone make/sell something like a snap cap cone to dry fire a revolver?

Yes, there is a possibility of work hardening the hammer until it breaks . A properly set up percussion revolver is designed so that the caps are sure to go off, the number of damaged nipples on original guns is evidence of this; I have two, as new mechanically, revolvers from the 1850/6os...
