    What caliber rifle to get?

John: It's almost impossible to give a recommendation that means anything with no idea what you want to do with this gun. Are you target shooting, hunting, or both? If hunting, what are you hunting? Small game, birds, deer, moose, bear? Are you hunting open areas or are you busting serious...

    Minnesota Doe

That's a nice Minnesota doe. :thumb: I'm surprised that load didn't tip her over on the spot! Doesn't look like you got as much snow as we did.

    Doe down

That's a dandy doe. Well done! :thumb:

That's the kind of surprise that's worth getting sprung on you! Congrats on a great buck taken with a perfect shot from a fine rifle! :thumb:

    Getting Back In

Sounds like a fun project! Getting one's kit all put together and spending time practicing is a great endeavor. If you want to see what a .50 PRB will do, watch a few of Brian Beckum's videos. I highly recommend his "Real Blackpowder" and "Flintlocks and Whitetails" Vol 1 & 2 videos. He...

    Can You Help?

I do. Getting within 15 yards of a wary wild animal takes great HUNTING skills. Drawing a bow, especially one you cannot hold back for two minutes, can be tricky and must be timed to avoid detection. The animal's senses of sight, hearing, and especially smell can easily catch the hunter at...

    Can You Help?

I didn't mind too much as long as they still required a primer vs sealed electronic ignition, scopes allowed on them (exception for medical need OK), and now worse, basically a breach loader trying to evade the requirement of loading through the muzzle. Early versions, other than being inline...

    Chronic Wasting Disease

Never saw a thread go off topic before on the M/L forum. I'm shocked!!! 🤣 I know I've never personally dragged one off topic!;)

    Odd One

All kinds of injuries happen, both nature and "man made." Torn or missing ears, missing limbs, torn tails, injured or missing eyes, noses blown off by errant shots, etc. I would imagine frostbite can happen in really cold climates. And of course, birth defects. Does with antlers. Had a doe...

    .40 caliber deer hunt

Congratulations! Looks like the shot was right there. :thumb:

    Yes, a 45 caliber will kill a 15 point buck…

Congratulations! :thumb: That "little" .45 has certainly done well by you! Remind us again of your load, please.

Strange Day for Me in the Woods.

"Scores" or numbers don't denigrate a deer...only certain people do by making derogatory comments about someone else's deer. To me, a "score" helps me visualize a deer I have not seen and that's all. Scores are just numbers that mean nothing as to the personal value of the animal to the...

    Chronic Wasting Disease

"CWD was first identified in captive deer in a Colorado research facility in the late 1960s, and in wild deer in 1981. By the 1990s, it had been reported in surrounding areas in northern Colorado and southern Wyoming. Since 2000, the area known to be affected by CWD in free-ranging animals has...

Strange Day for Me in the Woods.

Glad this post showed up because for years I've wondered what the heck was happening to me and more so, HOW it could happen. I have been an insanely devoted hunter for over 50 years. Bow Hunting only until the year 2000 when I added traditional muzzleloading. I am a life member of two state...

    Kibler Fowler

Looks like it has a fair amount of drop at the comb. I was hoping for that. My SMR (and it looks like the others as well) have too little drop for my build. Important to be looking right down the barrel without going through contortions.

    Smoothbore makes meat…

Congrats, John. Looks like the "high shoulder shot!" No wonder it was one & DRT, especially with a .626! Good luck with the .54!

Congrats! Great way to play out the situation to get a shot, and then executing. :thumb:

    Chronic Wasting Disease

While I have no doubt that happens, many states, including my home state of Minnesota, forbid by law bringing big game animals into the state whole or with brains/spinal column. So it shouldn't be happening. "It is illegal to import whole deer, elk, moose and caribou carcasses into Minnesota...

    Chronic Wasting Disease

Our DNR wildlife leadership has been pro herd minimization for about 15 years. So much so that a few years ago it came to an ugly head between deer hunters and the DNR and the legislature called for an audit...that didn't go too well for the DNR regarding their deer population estimate models...
